I nearly did a peak Botham (first 50 tests) v peak Imran (last 50 tests) yesterday, until I realised the bare figures weren't as close as I thought they might be.

The trouble with Garry is that he doesn't really ever have a great bowling period?

Botham did benefit somewhat from WSC weakened sides in his peak
And Sobers cashed in against some pretty weak Indian sides. I'm not sure who faced better opposition, which should be a deciding factor in this comparison as both have amazing stats.

Sobers had some (enormously) great series vs the quartet and Gupte in India no?

lol. Big underrating of peak Botham’s bowling going on here.
Massively underestimating what a beast Sobers was with the bat. In whole history of test cricket we have only seen something similar to it very few times.

Similarly Imran in his peak with a ball alone is a greater asset than peak Botham as an allrounder.

These are performances either never seen before or after, or only seen few times.

This I can agree with as Peak Imran had at worst the 2nd best peak ever

Botham’s first 25 tests

1336 @ 40.48 6 tons 3 fifties
139 @ 18.52 14 5’fers 3 10’fers
36 catches

Aside from Bradman (possibly) there is no way anyone beats this allround peak based on a single discipline lol.
Yeah Botham uptil 82 I would say was really special. If he didn't fail against WI I would have given him the edge in this over Sobers.

Sobers was still at best a fairly mid bowler while being a top drawer bat.
