Broad suffered four in a year tbf. And has had five since late 2010

Agreed, sucks for Patto but from a team perspective I don't think this is of great consequence to the Aussies in this series. Bird is a perfectly capable replacement and their bowling stocks and ability has never been in question.

Had a back injury and missed a while but most of his problems were caused by Cooley trying to change his action.

I know a few of us have taken piss saying your quicks are made of glass in past but this is a serious worry now as he can't play a series without breaking down. Makes you think of Bruce Reid all the time.

I think if you went through the history of successful 85+ mph bowlers historically, most of them have had back injuries in their teens or early 20s. I don't think it necessarily designates him as injury prone in the long term. He could be a Shane Bond but he could just as easily be a Brett Lee in that sense.

Yeah, I can't think of a seam bowler who didn't have serious injuries throughout his career.

From a technical standpoint, Pattinson is much, much better than Bond, Lillee, Gillespie or Lee were at the same age so the chances of him having a long career are pretty good IMO - reckon this is just another example of growing pains in a young fast bowler

However, given that he appeared off-color from the first ball at Lords, you have to wonder why they selected him at all

Rate the former very highly; think he's made for "English" conditions, which, ironically, we're probably increasingly unlikely to see, what with the driest July since 1825 in the offing.
