Yeah, when Test matches are finishing in barely 2.5-3 days, you have to ask whether a few overs here and there really matters.

Thinking a straight swap Maharaj in for Faf could be a runner? Then again if that were to happen that batting looks very fragile without Faf already even more so with one less specialist bat.

Maharaj coming in weakens the batting too much and a spinner's probably not going to be necessary at the Wanderers.

Well its almost certain that Hamza will get a shot, and if Markram injured then another opening bat... will be interested to see who they draft in for that.

Philander should really be pulled up for running on the pitch with his 'appeals'. Getting worse and worse lol.

Other than the all seam attack, what do we blame the over-rates on? When I saw they literally ran between overs. Left/right combinations are the bane of my existence as a regular 3rd man / deep fine leg denizen, is that factored in? I didn't see too many other obvious delays from the fielding side. How did they bowl more overs 40 years ago?

WI over rates were really poor.

Not sure what should be done. Better to keep the over rates up, but you shouldn't be forced to bowl spin

All captains should really get hit this. Over rates are pathetic all round.

It's an absolute hate of mine. No excuse for not bowling 15 per hour.

Yup. And has played crucial knocks too, when the top order's been fragile.

Only thing on my mind rn is subcontinent conditions and how Hamza/Mulder is gonna fare over there, while de Bruyn has more exposure (and success) on that front.
I've been thinking about this and ability v spin. That Theunis knock in Sri Lanka shocked me as I didn't think he had it in him & I didn't particularly think... ok Theunis is a really good player of spin but then he played that knock.

Zubayr has improvement to make v spin but I do think he is the type of player who can adapt his game to requirements. He scored some runs for SA Emerging in Sri Lanka a few years ago but nothing dominant (Markram, White, Klaasen were main run scorers) & I think the recent India A 4-day matches weren't played on typical spinning wickets. I'm sure Borges will confirm that. But he scored the runs and with Rudi Second the only batsman in 4-day series to really push forward their case.

Like for Hamza I do think Mulder will adapt to requirements the more they in the elite environment. But like Hamza you probably say they get out to spinners donestically from time to time. Think Mulder has been to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka for SA u19s where he did alright particulary when he was bit older in Sri Lanka where he got runs in u19 test matches and 50-over games.

This is all with India in mind later this year and I think we all know how tough it is going to be for this SA side.

What about Pieter Malan to open if Markram doesn’t make it?Havent seen his name thrown around much.Has very good numbers the past 2 seasons.

He does come into the mix but only if Markram is unavailable which looks unlikely.

Although he has competition from Eddie Moore, Gihahn Cloete, Reeza Hendricks. His younger bro probably more talented but think they will want a full 4-day season and SA A selection first for him.
