Pakistan Tour of South Africa 2018/19

Definitely wouldn't open him. If he comes in, its for Amla (if he isn't alright) or de Bruyn (dropped).

Yeah. You can see this being spoken about as we move forward and if things don't go well with the players they try especially when Amla and Faf retire.

But when Markram is functioning like that first innings how demoralising is it for the opposition when the opener just looks so dominant and scores so fast. We luck when we had Gibbs and Smith who could do that.
Smashing the bowlers is about as handy from the openers as from the middle. Wearing them down is much handier from openers. Gibbs was a touch too aggressive for me, would like to see a hint more Elgar. Smith was Elgar + gibbs, depending on what the situation called for. Realistically, this is too much to ask for from other bats. Got to pick one or the other.

Sehwag would disagree...

Sehwag would get out off wild slashing in over one or two way too often and expose the middle to the new ball. Definitely too aggressive for an opener. Was such a lunatic that it might have been the only option though.

Oh yeah - not saying Gibbs and Smith had to be together but they just naturally scored fast playing their game. Markram does that too and with Elgar being on the other end it is definitely memories of G.Kirsten and Gibbs which is one of the more under-rated opening partnerships in test history for me.

Markram is such a quality player that he can actually do both jobs; the best thing about him in his career so far is how often he goes on to make it big when he does get in.

Markram moving down the order is going to be determined by the best available batsmen for SA. SA went through a period of no openers and Markram was advised to become an opener as it was his best chance to get into the team. Currently we have a number of potential top order players but we shall have to see what happens at 5/6 still.

Anyone find it hypocritical the way Newlands (and presumably the orders come from CSA/ICC) has all things strongly worded warnings about anyone found betting (not match fixing mind, betting) in the ground will be evicted. Meanwhile it's the WSB Cobras (and the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, and Hollywoodbets use malware as an advertising tool, they are not an ethical company at all) and CSA itself is partnered with Betway. I get it, the boards are cash-strapped (somehow) but that money is definitely not clean...

Elgar will presumably captain the side, Hamza will debut and the likes of Hendricks and Mulder may also feature if Amla and Markram don’t pull through.

It's a good thing that they are cracking down on this.

Though I wonder how India and England escaped earlier, without any penalties for slow over rates.

That's rough.
It's his second offence in twelve months, and it's completely in line with the regulations, so you can't argue with it. Although it does seem a little ridiculous to be punished for South Africa being one over short in a match that didn't last four full days.
