Packer looking to sell Channel 9

Matt79

This week in the news it was revealed Packer's PBL is looking to sell their media interests, including their magazines, and in particular Channel 9. It will be interesting to see whether this leads to any shake up in the very stable and lucrative arrangement between 9 and Cricket Australia, that has existed since the end of World Series Cricket.

Potentially it might mean that the commitment to cricket on free to air telly takes even more of a beating in Australia.

Thoughts?

We're already under threat of losing all sport on free to air television. Channels 7, 9 and 10 all have adverts up now with exactly the same words just different clips advertising savemysport.com.au.

Either way, it's not good.

Hard to predict what this will mean, PBL will look to focus on the more profitable casinos and Channel 9 hasn't done too well this year, especially losing the footy rights.

If they sell, 9 will go down the drain.

It's partly the free-to-air stations fault anyway.

I just hope that Tony Greig gets the boot.

I see that Channel 9 are bringing aboard a female commentator this year. (I can't remember her name, I just know that they snaffled her from SBS)

Yeh something like they were planning to interview players after they got out, walking back to the rooms, but thankfully CA ruled that out.

Could be the same woman who asked Warne about getting back with his wife just after he got out and was walking off. He was pissed needless to say.

You would hope if they got a female commentator it would be one of our ex-internationals like Belinda Clark

That would make sense but the way she looked in the photo I think she was employed for the eye candy value.

She was involved in the SBS world cup broadcast and I thought she was great value. She was interesting and seemed to know a bit about football. I think she now hosts a 1 hour basketball game (but she is only seen really at the start and end) and that is on channel 9. I hope she brings something different to the commentry team.

That's the FTA stations fault. They get the rights to games and then don't show them live. Pay TV offer much better services when it comes to spots broadcasts.

Problem is not everyone has pay-tv, or can afford it. I know I'd love to have Foxtel on, but can't justify the cost.

Well, people should be pertitioning FTA stations to give people a better deal rather than pertitioning against pay tv. The reason why people get Foxtel is because they are unsatisfied with FTA station's coverage.

Oh I agree with that.

SBS did real good last year by demonstrating there was an audience for live cricket, and were rewarded with great ratings. Hopefully it will make the other stations sit up and take a bit of notice - although I notice no FTA broadcasts of the CT.

Exactly the same with me.

FTA can't show everything and sometimes even choose not to show stuff because they are commercial networks (bar ABC) that need to make money. They do what's in their best interests financially.

Exactly. They never do what is in the interest of the viewer.
