Grudge match lives up to expectations.
Yorkshire travelled to Zimbabwe for a much anticipated clash with rivals Mashonaland.
While both Manager's teams have never actually played each other under their respective reigns, leading up to the match there were a number of press conferences in which both sides attacked each other.
Mashonaland's manager Andy Cameron claimed Cornwall was nothing but a tail-end slogger after Yorkshire manager Greg Thomas said Mashonaland couldn't play spin.
When Yorkshire elected to bat first, it took just 3 deliveries to remove keeper-batsman Salman for a paltry 6 runs. Cornwall followed suit soon after, also falling for six to the bowling of Tudor. Yorkshire were 2-25 and Mashonaland were 1-0 in the war of words when new Captain Michael Dawn strode out to bat.
Saqlain Mushtaq's fielding was more effective than his bowling.
The small band of die-hard Yorkshire fans who turned out to cheer their team on were silent in fear as he faced his first delivery. Fans had been wondering, hoping, praying that Dawn would be their batting saviour this season and after the First Class match with Free State, they were doubting already.
But his magnificant innings of 144 not out off 154 balls heralded the dawn of a new era for Yorkshire batting. Yes, I said it. Dawn of a new era.
Ian Bradshaw struggled to find line and length and was punished by the Yorkshire batsmen.
Time after time he cut and drove the Mashonaland bowlers with a fair share of creative shots too, bringing up his half century with an effortless flick to mid-wicket.
Beasley fell short of a half century in the partnership of 116 for the third wicket, removed by Straw for 45 as Mashonaland used 6 bowlers to try and get on top of the situation.
Yashpal made 35 in a stand of 76 when he attempted to pull Harvey for a six.
Kripal Singh quietly made 14 as Yorks saw out their 50 overs, 4 out for 255.
Alex Tudor took two wickets in a superb spell of bowling
Mashonaland started strongly with the Kade Harvey and Oulton opening combination racing to 47 at a healthy strike rate.
Dawn brought Anup Dave and Danish Kaneria after Gough and Cornwall toiled away without effect.
Dave bowled beautifully in his first over and on the final delivery, he got a snick from Oulton which was taken easily by the keeper, Mashonaland 1-47.
Kaneria was the next to strike, bamboozling Harvey with a delivery that "turned a bloody mile" to go through the all-rounders defences, Mashonaland 2-65.
Anup Dave provided Yorks with the first breakthrough.
Danish Kaneria lets one rip.
With the spinners dominating, J Beasley and Q Roll opted to see them off as they bowled with great precision. Roll claimed some revenge, however, smacking Dave for two fours off his last over.
Dawn ignored his third seam option and called Beasley over to bowl. It nearly proved to be an error as he ended up going for 57 runs for zero wickets. Roll took it to the part-timer, bringing up a fine century which received a round of applause from the crowd and the players on the field.
Mashonaland was in with a sniff as they gained on their target. Two loose overs from Gough and suddenly Yorkshire were on the backfoot. Fortunately, Cornwall was bowling like a metronome and Beasley had no answer as he become arguably the villain for Mashonaland, finishing unbeaten on 75 off 110 balls compared to his partners 104 off 118.
After the match, Yorkshire manager was jubilant but short when talking to the media.
"It was a great performance by our guys, especially Dawn. He really took the game away from the Mashonaland bowlers. Though it wasn't a clear cut win! They got to within 12 runs of our total and our bowling proved to be blunt in areas. I think they might've bowled too defensivley trying to protect the total instead of trying to remove wickets. It was a very nevrous final 10 overs" he said before boarding the team bus, presumably on it's way to Mashonaland's only nightclub.
Before he hopped on the bus, Dawn also had a few words on his man of the match performance, and more importantly, his side's first win under his captaincy.
"It was brilliant! Though, like Greg said, it wasn't clear cut. I was very tense as they slowly closed in on the target but our bowlers were very tight and it was a relief as soon as the final ball was bowled" he said as he smiled and laughed. "It's felt like a huge weight has been lifted off not only my shoulders but the entire team. It's great to get our first win so early on when the press back home wasn't quite so kind. Personally, the 144 ranks as my best innings to date in the WCC competition and I'm thrilled that it laid the foundations for our win. I must congratulate Mashonaland on a tough match, though. Roll is a class player and I was very impressed by Oulton's style even though he wasn't out there for too long. The kid's going to be a star and I look forward to when we host them later in the comp. Thanks!"
