One Day Round 1 Match Reports and Press Releases

Karachi Start OD Season With A Bang
Following the first XI's impressive 187 win over QLD, the Karachi 2nds looked to follow up with their own impressive victory. A typically packed stadium saw Youhana win the toss, and elect to bat. Jaffer fell early on, and while 5 of the top 7 got starts, most notably Richardson, 43(62) and rookie Jamieson, 32(38), Karachi soon found themselves at 7-162. Facing a small total to defend, Mills joined Monaghan at the crease, and the pair set about rescuing the situation. They blasted their way to a unbeaten 113 run stand, scoring 63(57) and 60(52) respectively. At one stage facing the task of defending a sub 200 total, the Karachi bowlers now had more than enough runs to play with and this showed, as they ripped through the QLD batting order. Openers Martin(2/4) and Pandit(3/30) soon reduced QLD to 3/10. Mills then followed up from his batting heroics by destroying any hopes of a comeback, taking the next 3 wickets and finishing with the figures of 3/22. QLD never recovered from 6/57 as Pandit then returned to clean up the tail, dismissing QLD for a paltry 95. There was no real question as to who was MOM, with Mills easily taking the award.

Defeat To Lowly Guyana

A batting collapse of the highest order followed by a weak bowling effort saw South Australia fall to an eight-wicket victory in front of a very disappointed Adelaide Oval crowd. Håkon Mørk was fuming after the game, saying that "the way some of these guys got out was disgraceful, and just because we've got batting down to eight does not mean you can throw your wicket away like that. Unacceptable."

Nevertheless, he had good words for Guyana batsman Jacques Rudolph, whom he said "played excellently in tricky conditions - we have a lot to learn from Jacques."

Game ratings:

South Australia:

Ben Allen 2/10 - chipped a return catch in the opening over, began the rot
Yarvinder Singh 4/10 - very nice 22, then gone
Khan Rangnekar 3/10 - for a top-scorer, it may seem harsh, but Rangnekar never looked in control at all - making 24 off 65 deliveries as Fazl-e-Akbar and Satti tied him down
Sanjay Borde 4/10 - solid wicketkeeping and 20 quick runs, nothing special
P Madurasinghe 1/10 - faced 26 deliveries without scoring, then bowled six and conceded 13 runs. An awful match. Gets a point for running out Donald.
Ben Collyer 1/10 - charging the spinners with the total on 76 for four is spectacularly clever
Rick Stratton 5/10 - quick runs and solid but unthreatening bowling
Harold Froggett 2/10 - did not bowl much, useful batting though
Trev Binny 4/10 - tight bowling
Ian Mooney 5/10 - didn't get a chance to shine, out to a gem from Kael on his hat-trick
Heath Axelby 5/10 - got the one wicket

International 12th Man
Yorkshire fail to capitalise on Foster/Belle Brilliance
Yorkshire captain Greg Belle was unavailable to comment on last Monday's One-Day game against Mashonaland, but it's highly doubtful he could have told us anything we didnt already know. What happened is thus:
Winning the toss and batting, Yorkshire overcame the early loss of Marsden and the failure of key batsmen to convert their starts into big scores to make 275 all out. The much-hyped pairing of Timothy Lyon and wicket-keeper Patel amounted to fifty runs in total, not enough to spur Yorkshire onwards during the middle overs, but enough to give Ben Foster support on his way to an emphatic century. With captain Belle slamming a fifty from just thirty-nine balls, Yorkshire managed to post a fairly decent score, although the man of the moment was undoubtedly Mashonaland bowler Claydon, who ripped through the Yorkshire batting lineup like a warm knife through an ex-girlfriend. William Kitson, not a bad player of pace, was knocked to his backside by his first ball before being beaten by a brilliant slower-ball the next. In total, Claydon needed just seven balls to remove Kitson, Davies, Sami and Arafat. The destruction was complete on the Yorkshire batting, but it had yet to begin on the poor, defenseless bowlers...
COMING UP NEXT: The Mashonaland innings report, and we catch up with rookie Ben Foster as he describes to us his dreams, his idols and his innings.

Guyana Shake Division One

The WCC division one competition has sprung an unexpected suprise after the opening one day round. Guyana upset former WCC heavyweights South Australia with a crushing and clinical eight wicket win. The win was described by Guyana manger Kyle Wright as the best win he has witnessed in charge of Guyana.

Speaking to the press after the game an obviously happy Wright spoke about how things would turn around for Guyana fans in season seven.

"I know Guyana fans have been teased in the past, especially last season when we fell away terribly after an amazing start to the season. However, with the mixture of youth and experience we have this season along with the best batsman in WCC and emerging young quicks, I have a feeling Guyana will be taking home atrophy this season."

Guyana were lead briliantly by MOTM J Rudolph who was unbeaten on 70 as he was instrumental in guiding Guyana to the victory target of 123 with only two wickets down. However the game was set up by the bowlers with Kael stunning the already bemused Adelaide crowd with a stunning hall of 4-5 off two overs to leave South Australia well short posting a total of 119.
