One Day Round 1 Match Reports and Press Releases

First Class Debutant
The capital City Boys were just not ready for fired-up Victorian Line-up that was keen to atone for last weeks events. Batting first Victoria piled on 243 off the 50 overs, losing only 4 wickets. Wicketkeeper Batsman Schiller in a man of the match preformance, blenty 44 of just 44 balls. Backup later by recruits Mughal (66) and Madanagopal (70) pushing the run chase beyond the reach of the ACT.

In reply ACT could only manage 189, all out, with the 5 quicks from victoria proving the real difference in the match. Brett impressive on debut for Victoria, taking 3/27 and proving just too fast for the ACT tailenders. A good knock from Louden, and some wayward bowling from Ahmed was all that kept ACT in the match.

Looking forward to the 2nd XI match.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Grudge match lives up to expectations.

Yorkshire travelled to Zimbabwe for a much anticipated clash with rivals Mashonaland.
While both Manager's teams have never actually played each other under their respective reigns, leading up to the match there were a number of press conferences in which both sides attacked each other.
Mashonaland's manager Andy Cameron claimed Cornwall was nothing but a tail-end slogger after Yorkshire manager Greg Thomas said Mashonaland couldn't play spin.
When Yorkshire elected to bat first, it took just 3 deliveries to remove keeper-batsman Salman for a paltry 6 runs. Cornwall followed suit soon after, also falling for six to the bowling of Tudor. Yorkshire were 2-25 and Mashonaland were 1-0 in the war of words when new Captain Michael Dawn strode out to bat.

Saqlain Mushtaq's fielding was more effective than his bowling.

The small band of die-hard Yorkshire fans who turned out to cheer their team on were silent in fear as he faced his first delivery. Fans had been wondering, hoping, praying that Dawn would be their batting saviour this season and after the First Class match with Free State, they were doubting already.
But his magnificant innings of 144 not out off 154 balls heralded the dawn of a new era for Yorkshire batting. Yes, I said it. Dawn of a new era.

Ian Bradshaw struggled to find line and length and was punished by the Yorkshire batsmen.

Time after time he cut and drove the Mashonaland bowlers with a fair share of creative shots too, bringing up his half century with an effortless flick to mid-wicket.
Beasley fell short of a half century in the partnership of 116 for the third wicket, removed by Straw for 45 as Mashonaland used 6 bowlers to try and get on top of the situation.
Yashpal made 35 in a stand of 76 when he attempted to pull Harvey for a six.
Kripal Singh quietly made 14 as Yorks saw out their 50 overs, 4 out for 255.

Alex Tudor took two wickets in a superb spell of bowling

Mashonaland started strongly with the Kade Harvey and Oulton opening combination racing to 47 at a healthy strike rate.
Dawn brought Anup Dave and Danish Kaneria after Gough and Cornwall toiled away without effect.
Dave bowled beautifully in his first over and on the final delivery, he got a snick from Oulton which was taken easily by the keeper, Mashonaland 1-47.
Kaneria was the next to strike, bamboozling Harvey with a delivery that "turned a bloody mile" to go through the all-rounders defences, Mashonaland 2-65.

Anup Dave provided Yorks with the first breakthrough.

Danish Kaneria lets one rip.

With the spinners dominating, J Beasley and Q Roll opted to see them off as they bowled with great precision. Roll claimed some revenge, however, smacking Dave for two fours off his last over.
Dawn ignored his third seam option and called Beasley over to bowl. It nearly proved to be an error as he ended up going for 57 runs for zero wickets. Roll took it to the part-timer, bringing up a fine century which received a round of applause from the crowd and the players on the field.
Mashonaland was in with a sniff as they gained on their target. Two loose overs from Gough and suddenly Yorkshire were on the backfoot. Fortunately, Cornwall was bowling like a metronome and Beasley had no answer as he become arguably the villain for Mashonaland, finishing unbeaten on 75 off 110 balls compared to his partners 104 off 118.

After the match, Yorkshire manager was jubilant but short when talking to the media.
"It was a great performance by our guys, especially Dawn. He really took the game away from the Mashonaland bowlers. Though it wasn't a clear cut win! They got to within 12 runs of our total and our bowling proved to be blunt in areas. I think they might've bowled too defensivley trying to protect the total instead of trying to remove wickets. It was a very nevrous final 10 overs" he said before boarding the team bus, presumably on it's way to Mashonaland's only nightclub.

Before he hopped on the bus, Dawn also had a few words on his man of the match performance, and more importantly, his side's first win under his captaincy.

"It was brilliant! Though, like Greg said, it wasn't clear cut. I was very tense as they slowly closed in on the target but our bowlers were very tight and it was a relief as soon as the final ball was bowled" he said as he smiled and laughed. "It's felt like a huge weight has been lifted off not only my shoulders but the entire team. It's great to get our first win so early on when the press back home wasn't quite so kind. Personally, the 144 ranks as my best innings to date in the WCC competition and I'm thrilled that it laid the foundations for our win. I must congratulate Mashonaland on a tough match, though. Roll is a class player and I was very impressed by Oulton's style even though he wasn't out there for too long. The kid's going to be a star and I look forward to when we host them later in the comp. Thanks!"

Yorkshire 4-255 from 50 overs

A Tudor 2-34, B Straw 1-23

Mashonaland 2-243 from 50 overs

Western Australias one day season got off to a terrible start. Vandort was run out of a duck leaving the home team at 1-0. then a brilliant partnership between Rayadu and Uthapa take the score to 182 before the 2nd wicket, Uthapa for 77, fell. Rayadu went on to score a magnificent century, in what was his debut match as WA one day captain. Rayadu was finally dissmised for 107 as WA went on to score 278-5 off thier 50 overs.

A Adams, M Hossain Jnr, W Quinn, J Graham and H Jenkins all performed well with the ball, sharing the wickets around. Auckland, whilst managin 241, but were never in the game.

Mashonaland focus upon positives

Despite their agonising 12 run loss, Mashonaland manager Andy Cameron appeared upbeat in the post-match press conference in Bulawayo today.

"We were unlucky, there's no doubting that, but Yorkshire played well enough to deserve a victory. Dawn played a great knock, and despite an equally outsanding innings from Quinn [Roll], it just wasn't enough."

When asked about the apparant war of words that had taken place before the game, Cameron responded with a wry grin.

"Greg and I have a good relationship, despite what it may seem like in the media. Obviously, you have to question his motives about promoting Cornwall up the order, but as a manager you have to go with your instincts. I think it would be fair to say, though, that his instincts and ideas were not great today, in terms of Cornwall and his allegations that we have a weakness against spin."

The Mashonaland manager seemed less pleased when asked about the performance of Quentin Oulton, the opening batsman that Cameron has been talking up in the lead up to this season.

"Both Quentin and I know that he's not at the top of his game right now. He looked to be in good touch today though, and told me he's confident that he'll be racking up some big scores soon. On that note, it was very encouraging to see some good signs from the other batsmen as well. Quinn Roll's century in his first WCC innings was a great innings for such a young player, and although James [Beasley]'s knock could have been timed a bit better, he still put 75 runs on the board. In terms of bowling, Alex Tudor bowled a great opening spell, and Kade Harvey and Ben Straw put in some good part time efforts. I was a bit disappointed that Oulton didn't get a bowl due to a slight niggle, but hopefully he'll be having a few overs soon."

Cameron was equally optimistic when it came to his team's prospects for the rest of the season.

"We're definitely stronger in first class cricket, but that doesn't mean that I'm not expecting a full effort from the boys in this form of the game. Obviously, we'll be looking to expand upon those positives we've seen today in order to make a claim for promotion. Next time we meet with Yorkshire, we won't be so unlucky."

Nsw continued there good form against Kent in teh one day arena with a solid 101 run win in the first round of the shortend version.Batting first and with some new faces in the side nsw took to getting a solid target. Loosing S Cook 10(22) early wasnt what the nsw boys wanted but it didnt startle there target and with young L Griffith 60(77), D Quayle 89*(92) & R Sodhi 59*(43) all doung there job Nsw hit a comfortable 4 - 272 of there 50 overs. The best of the kent bowlers was N Kumble with 2 - 27 of 10 overs. Just sensational.

With the fast bowlers ready to tear the kent line up apart they couldnt wait to get out there and do what they do best. They got off to a great start and had the home side struggling @ 5 - 59 and if it wasnt for some good lower order batting from R Jesuraj 41*(59) it could have been alot lower. G roll 3 - 32 & I Bloom 3 - 40 where the pick of the bowlers with O Cole taking 2 and Q Moore & Skipper Kallis grabbing 1 each.

All in all a good performance from the boys ona first up road trip and the manager was very happy and he had this to say,

Bugs Malone : very happy with the boys, we showed we do have what it takes and if we gel together as a side and support each other we can do what we practise to do. we have some really good game breakers in the side and if we can all support each other and put in the eprformances that we want it should be a good year. happy with teh start in both forms lets just hope we can take that form into the next games and not get too complacent with these good first up early wins.

Queensland manager Nayak was shattered following his side's 143 run defeat. When asked what went wrong?. He said that he had no clue at all, except that maybe the inclusion of W Phadkar as a batsman, who bowls 9 OPM was a tactical oversight.

Apart from that, he was all at sea, as how his incisive bowling order had given away 332 runs, and his solid batting order had collapsed so soundly.

He was visibly distraught, and he asked for a reprieve from the usual media glare to recover and recoup from this most demoralising of defeats.

Karachi today recorded their first win under new manager Mathew Mitchell.

After the batting failed in the first FC game of the season, star One Day batsman M Dhoni let leash with a ferocious 143 off only 107 balls. Captain J Cooke helped out with 64 (76) with other notable scores coming from Y Cole 54 (43) and M Manhus 44 (49) to give Karachi a huge total of 332-4.

Karachi's bowlers then took their chance to shine with Pradeep getting a wicket with the first ball of the innings. All five bowlers took a wicket with both J Pradeep and K Woodcock getting 2. J Louw got figures of 3/33 and dedicated his performance to his great friend Paddy Gundry manager of NSW 2nds. Y Cole bowled instead of P Leigh for no discernable reason, other than to give Queensland a hint of a chance with their tail. Queensland were dismissed for 145 and thereby giving Karachi victory by 187 runs.

Dhoni's stand out performance justifiably gave him MOTM in what was an all round display from Karachi.

Maurice Motors Lancs To Victory
Manchester Evening News

A superb century my Maurice Aronstam enable Lancashire to cruise to victory in the opening match of the one day competition. The South African batted right through the Lancashire innings for his unbeaten 135, helping to set a challenging target of 285 for Mumbai to win.

The prematch talk had centered on the middle order and Raees Amjad in particular, but, though Hector Midlane and Andy Anderton both contributed it was the burly Pretorian that stole the show. Lancashire outcast Andrew Flintoff proved the best of a dissappointing bunch of visiting bowlers, taking 1-30 from his 10.

Lancashire then surprised their Indian opponents with a move straight from the subcontinental cricket playbook. Spinner Sanjeewa Weerakoon opened the bowling with paceman Freeman, and did a fantastic job. Mumbai were reduced to 22-2 early doors, with Weerakoon involved in both wickets, and they never recovered.

All of the Lancashire bowlers proved to be economical with Engineer and Weerakoon going at less than 3 an over. Ahtar was the only batsman to put together a half threatening innings, but he was dismissed by a brilliant instinctive return catch from Albus Freeman for 62. Freeman was earlier left red faced after Men's Health purchased the advertising space on the reverse of the sightscreens, with risque shot's of the paceman appearing in between overs.

There was a decent debut behind the sticks for Ziggy Siggins, including the slick stumping of the dangerous Roach. Mumbai finished up 100 runs short after their 50 overs.

It was a day to rememeber for Aronstam, who was named man of the match infront of a sizeable crowd, which included his brother Marlon over from South Africa. Marlon thouroughly enjoyed his day out at Old Trafford and he was understandably impressed with the recently redeveloped ground. "It's a fantastic arena" he said "the views are terrific and the facilities behind the stands are first class. I particular enjoyed the betting shop, though I lost a bit of money betting on my brother to get out in the first over. Still I'll get to keep the leather jacket now!"

Plucky Surrey give Tamil Nadu a shock

Alan Jones walked off the pitch today a hero to WCC fans world-wide. A defeated hero. But a hero none the less. A plucky bowling performance, getting out Zac Birch and Mark Chapman, and helping restrict Tamil Nadu to 276-9, the match looked over at 21-5 when Jones strode to the crease. Veeru Mane combined well with quick-scoring Jones, putting together 114 for the sixth wicket, but 142 was still needed for victory. Tim Bradshaw hit 20 runs, more than Jones, in the 7th wicket combination, but even as handy Aravinda Wettasinghe strode to the crease, 105 unlikely runs were needed.

This is when Jones really got going. Hitting Innocent Chinyoka around the park, Jones was a big part of his figures of 10-0-80-1, and with Wettasinghe sticking around well, the runs kept coming. As Jones deposited Chinyoka over the main pavillion for the second time in three balls to bring up his century, a great cheer went up the ground, and a standing ovation that lasted at least 40 seconds commenced. Jones signalled towards his own dressing room, and then made a few choice gestures towards Andrew Cloete on the home balcony, who had critisised Surrey earlier in the week. But when Owen Henshaw managed to coax Wettasinghe into cutting the ball to Will Jefferson on the boundary, 38 runs were still required. Sunny fell for 3, and allthough Jones managed to smash some runs before Lawson was out, the innings fell 12 runs short of victory.

Jones departed off the field, having scored 126 unbeaten runs. He had played pretty much the lone hand in Surrey's battle. A hero indeed.

Tamil Nadu 276-9 (50) (Chapman 71, Jefferson 52*) (Lawson 41-4, Jones 51-2)
Surrey 265 (48) (Jones 126*, Mane 56) (Henshaw 34-5)

Tamil Nadu won by 11 runs.

Man of the Match: Alan Jones

Surrey Player Ratings

John Arlott 2/10 Looked ordinary on return to First XI cricket. Struggled to 8, then was meekly dismissed
William Denny 2/10 Got out hitting out before getting in. Hung on well to dismiss Henshaw.
Fardin Pandit 3/10 On 4 he slashed the ball through cover, but Cowe somehow held on. Captained competently.
Veeru Mane 7/10 Made a very nice innings of 56, the second highest of the match. Kept tidily, only conceding 4 byes.
Zac Keegan 1/10 Came to the crease in a pressure situation and bottled it. Poor performance.
David Arendse 5/10 Was run out trying to use his speed to make a run, but was picked off. Performed well in the field, dismissing Birch well, low to his left.
Alan Jones 10/10 Peformed well with the ball, and then made a candidate for innings of the season with a bat. Great start, but can it continue?
Tim Bradshaw 4/10 Had a poor start, going at more than a run a ball. Batted better than the top order.
Aravinda Wettasinghe 6/10 Bowled poorly, but batted very well, almost doing enough to secure victory.
Arafat Sunny 6/10 Bowled tightly, if not spectacularly.
Jermaine Lawson 8/10 The best Surrey bowler. Picked up four, and conceded the least runs out of all of the bowlers.

Press Conference to come...

Jones square cuts the ball.

TM Press Conferece

After the TN - Surrey game, the TN manager had the following to say, "Firstly. Pleased to get off to a good start. Always good to win the first one and we managed to do it both forms. Secondly, good effort from the boys. Put in a good effort except when we let Surrey think they still had a chance. Would have been better if we had continued the demolition."

When asked what he thought Jones' performance Andrew responded by saying "it was good. But I think batting wise it was mostly because we already had it won and dropped our standards. Can't say enough about his bowling though. Superb effort against our batting line-up."

A few upsets occured in Division 1 One Day with the highly fancied Queensland team being demolished by an unfancied Karachi outfit. The Colts nearly managed to lose against Leicestershire who can consider themselves very unlucky. "I think we're in a really good position. We have the ability to beat everyone in this division and hence take the title. The other side of the coin is that everyone could beat us on their day. Today was perhaps Surrey's day but we were still to good for them. I look forward to the 2nd XI match as Gray seems to be taking it more seriously. Hopefully the 2nds don't drop off and instead put in a very solid demolition. I know who I'm tipping."

Tasmania Scramble Home

A late batting collapse against a persevering Free State attack was not enough to stop Tasmania getting their OD season off to a winning start. Tasmania's bowlers had given them only a small total of 186 to chase. Bowes and Snow both scored half-centuries for the South Africans, but there was little else. The bowlers were tight, and Dhamika was particularly potent, picking up 4-30 from his 10,

The target was poor, but the game was not won yet, with some dangerous bowlers in the Free State line up. Tasmania gifted them their first breakthrough however, a horrendous mix-up on the first ball of the innings left Saleem Elahi high and dry, with Venkat whipping off the bails. Keith Bulman looked in good touch, hitting 5 boundaries in his 24, but he soon skied a pull which keeper Snow easily pouched.

This was where Tasmania looked to take the game away from the opposition. Vikram Chandrasekh and Suresh Raina built a partnership of 115 to leave Tasmania 33 runs away from victory. They scored reasonably slowly, particularly Chandrasekh who scored 55 from 104 balls. Free State's bowlers were accurate, but the Indian pair were able to keep the scoreboard ticking with relative ease. Chris Tremlett was the one who broke the partnership, Chandrasekh caught at cover. Next over, Raina followed, trapped lbw by Mohammed. With nothing left to lose, Free State attacked, and grabbed 3 more wickets to leave Tasmania needing 5 with three wickets left. There would be no miraculous comeback for Free State however, as Mike Rice lofted Mohammed straight over his head for four.

"We deserved the win, but made it harder for themselves than we should." said Alex Crampton in a post-match interview. " Had it been a larger total, it could have been embarrassing. Once again, it was the bowlers who shone, they really left Free State with little chance of winning the game."

Ashraf Ali shows his class

When most experts discuss who is the top One Day Batsmen in WCC, names such as Tweedie, Underwood, Jadhav or Amjad are the names that usually come up. One name that seems to be forgotten is Ashraf Ali. But after an amazing 134 against the Foxes over the weekend, Ali has shown the WCC public that his more then just minnow bashers and can match it with the best in the WCC. Most of his innings was with Colts superstar Andrew Tweedie at the other end, but anyone who was at the game would tell you that there was one man dominating the partnership and that man was Ali.

After a successful WCC World Cup, where he helped Pakistan into the semi finals, where Ashraf Ali first came to the attention of Colts manager Tharmi Loganathan. Once his former club Lahore CC, became defunct, Loganathan had no hesitation in the picking the Pakistan opener as his first pick during the draft. Loganathan has put a lot of faith in the inexperience opener by naming him as vice captain. Ashraf only captaincy experience was playing district cricket in Lahore, but Loganathan has seen some leadership qualities in him that the Colts will be hoping can guide them to success this season and belong.

Nadu didn't bring their A game: Dela Cruz

Tamil Nadu's recently appointed 2nd XI manager, Robertinho Dela Cruz, spoke of his disappointment at his team spineless 24-run loss to Surrey 2nds.

"It was a very disappointing game for us. We failed to press the opposition when we had the upper hand, and when `pulled by the current`, we simply stopped trying. It was as though we slipped into cruise mode and never got out of it," he revealed at the post match conference. "What I always ask of my players is that no matter what the circumstances are, never give up. This match was always in our reach and if they'd put in 100% for the whole game, I'm confident we would've won." Dela Cruz was notably aggrieved by the nature of the defeat.

"Chasing 235, we felt pretty confident. We've obviously got some classy batsmen in the lineup, and we also had Quimby (Radford) coming down from the 1s. I don't like placing the blame on any individuals, but the batting was excruciatingly slow in places and in one day cricket, it's one thing to score runs, but you've got to score them as quickly as possible, and I don't think our batsmen did that today," he conceded. "The bowling I was reasonably pleased with, Zebediah (Edmonds) bowled really economically and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. Imran (Farhat) was also good with his two wickets."

Dela Cruz didn't forget his opposition, however. "After all is said and done, you can't take anything away from Surrey. They were just too good, and I admire the way they approached the 2nd innings. There was alot of pressure on them to defend such a modest total, but they maintained their composure, which is a credit to their manager," he acknowledged. "There are good signs for Surrey and I don't see any reason why they can't go on and challenge for the title."

When asked about his own side's chances, Dela Cruz replied animatedly. "Not in a million years if the boys put in performances like this. They have talent, but if they can't stand up when the pressure is on, we won't have a chance. Today, we needed people to stand up and turn the direction in which the game was going, but we sat back and let Surrey bowl their way to victory. There is much work to be done."

Cloete eats humble pie as TN get off to a slow start

After a good bowling performance TN were left ruing their missed opportunity falling 24 runs short of their target despite having 6 wickets in hand. After saying all week it would be a "demolition" Cloete was asked, sitting beside Dauth at a recent press conference, what he had to say on the matter. He simply responded by saying "Surrey outclassed us [TN], they put up a solid batting effort and their bowling was just too economical at the end of the day. Fair play to Gray who's definitely managed to lift his, whom I first thought were bewlow par, sides in both gamse and come up with two very good performances."

Despite the good performance of Surrey, Cloete was still critical of his 2nd XI's performance. "Rob's a top manager and I gave him a week preparing the squad almost solely mentally with a few nets here and there. He went through scenarios and goals at the start of the season with the team and told them exactly what we expected and demanded from them. Today the boys in the 2nd XI let down Rob and disappointed myself greatly. I'll say it here, nobody in the 2nd XI who bats for his average and doesn't give 100% to the team's cause will EVER play 1st XI cricket for this club. Tamil Nadu has a long history and a very successful one, but throughout this history every player playing at any level for the club has considered it an honour. Today the 2nds disgraced the shirt and the club by this performance. I don't like to single players out, but Zac [affectionately nicknamed Zebediah by Dauth] is the only man who has come out both weeks and given it his all. Last game he was sensational and took many wickets while today he produced a fine 10 overs of tight and economical bowling despite being unlucky in the wickets department. Perhaps the rest of the guys can take his lead, if he's in the 2nds for much longer. It's better to get this sort of performance out of the way early, the player's know we're bitterly disappointed and they sure as hell know they won't be playing 1sts for a while."

Media reports around India haev also been heavily critical of Mongia's captaincy and when asked what he thought of this criticism Cloete hit out once again. "You sit there with your pen and paper and look for stories where ever you can to make a living. You don't get criticised for doing a below par job EVERY SINGLE TIME, so why should you criticise players for doing the same? As I've said, I'm bitterly disappointed with the 2nds, but I'm not goign to sit here and let them take crap from people like yourselves. Dinesh had a great day of captaincy and it was his work in the field that kept Surrey to such a low total despite only losing 5 wickets. While he didn't get an opportunity to bat, I have no doubts he would have done more to impress. The lacklustre display of batting in the middle is NOT his fault at all. I'm disappointed with Hasan, but Quentin [Quimby to Dauth] and Brett are only young and they're still finding their feet professionally. I'm totally confident Rob will have them firing next game and we'll come out and impress, still under the extrmely capable leadership of Dinesh."

Tamil Nadu are now 3 from 4, having recorded wins from both of their opening games in OD and 4D in the 1sts and storming to victory in the opening encounter of the 2nd XI 4D season.

McNamara Further Presses Case for 1st XI Job

WP 2nd XI had a very convincing victory over their Warwickshire counterparts, as William Longe led the side to 3/207, ensuring victory with three overs to spare.

On debut, Longe played a measured innings, and his hundred anchored the side as it chased a target which Warwicks would probably have liked another 30 to 40 runs added. This takes WP to a combined 2 wins in 2 games, and as McNamara eagerly waits for official confirmation from the board that he is to take over the 1st XI manager role at Western Province, the results thus far surely have not done him any harm.

In other promising signs for the club, rookie Ryan Hewetson bowled very economically, taking 1/17 off 6, while captain Jayden Schofield's 38* and tight bowling set the tone for the rest of the side.

McNamara was impressed with the Warwickshire side, and isn't eagerly awaiting the rematch later in the year. "They just looked a bit underdone - they didn't kick on in the last 10 overs, and if their finishing improves as the year goes on, and they can stay injury free, I think they'll be there and abouts".

ACT lose

In a pretty much as expected result the ACT Comets lost their opening one day match of the season 7 campaign. We failed to chase down a fairly moderate total although our batting line up will probably struggle this season this is a target we could have gotten, full credit to the Victorian bowlers who proved their ability against us.

Leicestershire Round 1 OD Wrap Up

A week after narrowly missing victory against Lancashire in the opening round of the first class season , Leicestershire headed to foreign territory on a spin friendly surface. After ending up bowling first Leicestershire were unable to stop A Ali as he single handedly contributed to creating a very healthy target to chase. A fight back from the two spinners in Sammels and Priyadarshana saw the Colts finish at 8/289. In the past Leicestershire have been able to generally chase down these large totals but being in division 1 for the first time, it was always going to be a tough ask. A solid partnership for the first wicket had an upset on the card before Vaughan departed for a hard fought 33. Underwood then continued as they continued to build upon their start before 2 quick wickets saw the score at 3/120. A mix up occured and Piggott was run out and on his way back to the pavilion. A solid partnership and a heroic effort followed by former ACT batsmen F Platt whose unbeaten 118 from 80 balls had the Colts feeling the pressure, which is something they weren't expecting from a Leicestershire side newly promoted to the big time. Unfortunately , and extremely unlucky, despite Platts efforts to steal a win for the guests he just ran out of partners, and were eventually dismissed 4 runs from victory. The Leicestershire camp were shattered , in particular an exhausted Platt who gave his all in a gutsy performance.

Speaking to the manager after the game about the match, showed the spirit is still in this Leicestershire squad and the match was summarised by a few poor decisions early on with some batsmen getting starts but not going on with them and then a few mix-ups between the batsmen all contributed to the eventual 3 run loss. Overall, the manager was extremely pleased with the way they fought despite having the odds stacked against them and has promised Leicestershire fans that they will try and bounce back from these early close disappointments.

On the whole the best players for Leicestershire were F Platt with 118 unbeaten from 80 balls, the Leicestershire U Lowe with a well made 58 from 72 balls and the spinner transferred from TN, U Sammels with 4/60 from 10 overs. The rest need to lift in future rounds. To conclude then the press have given the following votes for the Leicestershire OD player of the year.

3. F Platt
2. U Lowe
1. U Sammels
