Olympics - does anyone actually care anymore?

Which is more stunning - Eileen Gu or her decision to represent China? Discuss.

I'm going with Eileen here. She's a very attractive young lady.

Just seen an article blaming the lack of snow at this Olympics on global warming. Apparently nothing to do with holding them in an area whose monthly precipitationl at this time of the year is about 2 mm.

Hard not to feel for Kamila Valieva after that routine today. She's been through a lot, the poor kid.

Meanwhile, ski cross is pretty exciting to watch.

Agreed, some of the comments from the pitchfork brigade are just appalling, in the end she's not going to have made a choice over taken it herself, and there's talk from CAS that it might just be a trace element.

Whatever happens, she's a victim in all this, not a perpetrator.

At least these days we contend for stuff (good word that). Back in the day aside from the very occasional slightly effeminate ice skater our star names were the likes of Eddie the Eagle because he was so bad.

how do they determine what should be banned and what shouldn't? for example, kamila's test results showed traces of 3 separate heart medications, all of which apparently has the same/similar effect but one is illegal while the other two are not...?

It seems totally arbitrary from what I can see, I mean Meldonium, the one Sharapova was banned for, was on the prohibited substances simply because of a lot of people took it, or by people I mean Russians, they don't have to prove it has any effect as a PED. Hence why Wada has lost a fair few cases to CAS.

Personally find people's unswerving loyalty to WADA odd, as they are just another organisation, prone to biases and mistakes like all others, yet demand all sports and countries should follow their edicts slavishly.

I watched Curling, it's still boring as ****.

Obviously if we had won... it still would have been boring as ****.

I've only ever watched curling when up in the middle of the night feeding our recently born eldest in February 2002. I think our ladies team won gold, but I was too exhausted to really notice.

The Winter Olympics aren't really my thing, but I am old enough to remember watching John Curry and Robin Cousins winning gold in 1976 and 1980 respectively. And then Torvill and Dean in 1984, of course. I thought that Curry was a brave man. Having been outed by a journalist who'd assured him that his ***uality was off the record, Curry had to take a fair bit of flack over the matter. The worst of it was at a sports awards dinner where the guest comedian announced him as 'the fairy for the Christmas tree'. No wonder he moved to New York to get away from that kind of ignorance. He eventually died from AIDs. I remember an interview where he was talking about the judging panels for these events. Basically, if more than half of them were from Eastern Block countries, then the western skaters could forget it. Am I right in thinking that the scoring is more scientific nowadays?

Kenya was gonna send a young woman for these, but apparently funding didn't get to her, from the Ministry. Oh well
