Just thought of Tom Puna btw. Still, cool to see Nethula picked as there are so many Indians playing cricket in NZ and it would be good to see more make the grade.
How do you know of this man? He is a former team mate of mine after he retired from FC cricket.

How did today really happen - cricinfo said there was a lot of bounce in the pitch - why did we make 500 on it then.

What gives i realise Zimbos were missing their opener but he is just one guy. This is a poor performance from Zimbos and i was so impressed by them in Zimbo land.

Zim. hasn't got the bowlers to make use of any pace and bounce. While I was watching their pacemen only bowled in the 120s, and even then some of them were grunting. They obviously try but are not yet up to it but also obviously require a lot of exposure at the highest level to improve.

Cos I know various things about cricket

Really though? How old are you mate, Tom Puna died 15 years ago
I am 39. I will make a post about old Tom. I was actually trying to pick him for my draft but Ahtlai wouldn't allow it because he is dead.

I played against Tom when I was 18 - it was a two day match. I just couldn't score any runs off him. He was 63 and putting it on a dime.
Our team had to have a meeting about him during the weeks break before the 2nd day. I said to my coach - he just won't bowl a bad ball. What am i suppossed to do.
"Well young Hurricane this is your first time facing a quality bowler. They don't bowl balls you can hit for four. Just block him and score at the other end."

So as the game progressed on the 2nd day we just blocked and blocked him but it was like he was wearing you down with each defensive stroke and he was inside my head. They dropped me eventually and we got away on them and conquered Tom that day.

The next year I joined Ham East cricket club and Tom joined our side. Took at least 4 wickets every time he bowled. I have a lasting memory of him that he didn't know what to do with 11 fielders. He simply didn't need that many fielders. So some of us were told to stand next to each other.

Absolute beast in FC cricket I think he averaged 24 or something which for spin bowling is damn ****ing good.

It's a shame I barely got to watch any of this match. Work interfered with the first day and today, and I was set to be free for most of the second, fourth, and fifth days. I think of the whole 14 hours they played I got to watch about 2 of them.

I'd like to see NZ take a step up in performance level in Test cricket. I think the personnel we have now have more raw talent than we've seen for a long, long time. It's time to put some quality performances out on the field.
This was exactly what I wanted to see. Sure Zimbabwe were poor, but this has been a top draw performance from NZ. Top quality play from both the batsmen and the bowlers.

Very excited about our bowling attack. They carried on right from where they left off in Hobart.

I know everyone (especially the media) will focus on how bad Zimbabwe were, but I think this result has as much, if not more, to do with NZ's excellent performance.

Just a pity we now have to wait until March for our next Test match.

Great story. May I ask, do you know how he died? Sound like he was still playing competitive cricket and killing it right up until his death.

I could recount a similar story about facing Tarun Nethula in first XI cricket in the 1999/2000 season, but I've done that plenty of times before. Suffice to say I kept it in the memory banks because he was so good, but then thought he was never even going to crack FC cricket...he sure got there eventually.

heh, I only just realised (wasn't even thinking about it as I made that post) that Nethula and Puna are AFAIK our two only Indian born internationals.

Yep it was competitive cricket - it was senior A cricket which was the division below Premier in Hamilton. Which is pretty gun for someone his age. He had to have a runner when he batted that season which the other captains graciously allowed.

I don't know how he died as I left the country and it happened while I was away.

The more I think about this result, while being a New Zealand fan I'm always happy to win a test match, my heart goes out to Zimbabwe. They definitely came into this match on a high, and we're admittedly a good opponent to make some steps forward against as a test team (even if they eventually lose), and instead they took several huge steps backwards. Ouch.

I don't think Zimbabwe are as bad as they looked today. They didn't fluke beating Bangladesh or giving us and Pakistan a good run.

They just aren't very good at adjusting to foreign conditions yet. In 20/20 hindsight it was evident from the toss when Taylor chose to bowl.

The board should also get over themselves and pick Vusi.

It's kind of a shame we've only played one-off tests against them this summer. I'd love to see how they'd adjust (and same goes for us actually) if we played at least one more test against them. I'm happy for them though that they went down swinging in their second innings, but the implosion in their first innings is a bit understandable because of the high deficit and foreign conditions.

So, sirisorly people- have we reached a point where we're not really concerned that our national side picks a batsman with 5 years experience and a high score of 40
Is there a bigger fraud than Colin de Grandhomme? I really doubt it. He's basically made it to the top level because he can hit the ball really far, problem is that doesn't earn you any extra runs at the next level either so he's probably going to be just as usless for New Zealand as he is for Auckland. The less said about his "bowling" the better too.

Love the Tom Latham selection, early but the kid is all class. Just as long as they send him back to Canterbury for the first class stuff I'm happy. The rest I'm pretty meh about, Ellis isn't an international cricketer, Bates is average, and Nethula still bowls too much filith in-between the decent deliveries for my liking.

Don't mind the rain break too much. Guarantees more for KiWiNiNjA and I to watch over the weekend.
You mother****ing jinxing bastard!

Back from Napier. What a massacre. It was OK at first, but over way too quickly for my liking.

- The outfield was so slow, when I got a closer look it was cut pretty long. Actually the longest I've ever seen the outfield.

- Napier on a good day is awesome.

- Napier on a bad day sucks ass.

- Napier on a good day when Zimbabwe gets bowled out twice is awesome and sucks ass at the same time

- BJ Watling is my favourite Marshall twin.

- Southee actually stuck around awhile before starting to slog. Whaddya know?

- Marto!!!!!!!!!
