He's still injured isn't he?
I think he was coming back for the New Zealand tests that have now been cancelled, so he may be available.

My comment was more in regard to saying that Vettori couldn't get in ahead of Warne and Murali, when Murali wouldn't be in contention because he would be in the Asian side.

Oh!, Didn't realize that, I guess I was writing Daniel Vettori, or Darren and then just wrote Dough, instead of D. Gough

No, don't apologise, I thought it was an apt typo!

well, you can guarantee that an australian won't be, wanting as many aussies as possible to get a crowd along.
i think who ever playes it should be a sell out as this is for a noble cause

Rather worrying how important everyone on here seems to be taking the cricketing merits of the team.
It matters not who plays - all that matters is that the crowds flock in, the funds are raised and the help gets where it's needed.

Ponting has already been confirmed as captain with Fleming as vice captain.
If Fleming is playing it rather baffles belief that Ponting could be thought - by anyone - to be a better captain.
No, it doesn't matter to me, but clearly it does to most people, and if there is any seriousness in the game at all to pick Ponting as a captain with Fleming vice totally baffles all cricketing logic.

....

That's a total bullshit desicion.

They must have selected him on stats alone (win - loss ratio). But still, horrible desicion.

I have to agree with Richard.

If they give this match proper ODI staus why did they give the ROW v Asia matches official ODI status they played a few years ago?

wrong, the more high-profile players that are selected the more people that are going to watch = more funds raised

I would say Vettori will be 12th man in Australia and Gough would be 12th man in Asia.

Interesting who will fill each batting position with Gayle, Hayden & Gilchrist all being openers and Ponting/Fleming both number 3's.

Perhaps something like this:

Matthew Hayden (Australia)
Adam Gilchrist (Australia)
Chris Gayle (West Indies)
Stephen Fleming (New Zealand)
Ricky Ponting (Australia)
Brian Lara (West Indies)
Chris Cairns (New Zealand)
Dwayne Bravo (West Indies)
Shane Warne (Australia)
Darren Gough (England)
Glenn McGrath (Australia)

12th man - Daniel Vettori (New Zealand)

I would have Lara and Ponting above Fleming, And Hayden should not have been picked IMO..

The Asia team should have some fresh, young players and give them a chance to show their skills. The team should have Michael Vandort (Hard-hitting opening giant from SL), MS Dhoni (wild, relentless attacking Indian batsman who can also keep) and a new tearaway fast bowler from Pakistan.

To be honest I don't think it matters who is playing when this is the beneficiary.

Wonder if you could make a case for leaving him out? I agree it was the least likely selection, but with SA and England out of commission, it's not easy to see any alternative. But what about this 11:

Gayle
Gilchrist
Ponting (c)
Fleming
Lara
Cairns
Bravo
Warne
Vettori
Gough
McGrath

That looks alright to me, I still don't get why Fleming would bat above Lara though..

My thinking is that Fleming has been batting 3 or opening for a long time, but Lara has done a fair bit of batting at 4, so I'd keep them in that order owing to familiarity with the role.

Also, the prospect of Ponting and Lara together doesn't bear thinking about if they both got going!
