After multiple seasons groping in the dark about their best spinner and best bowling attack overseas, India would choose to go ahead with both Jaddu and Ashwin. Shardul might not get a chance if Jadeja's batting holds up.

I agree in some ways. But for the first ever final to be at Southampton is unfortunate considering it has no history for anything except traffic jams.
Yeah agreed, let's find the best two test teams in the world and see who is really the best by playing in Southhampton. Doesn't quite work eh.

It's not really about Southampton as such (although the location from a traffic point of view is horrible to get away from when it's a big crowd). I think it would have been nice for the first ever final to played at one of the more historical venues in the World. Obviously we live in strange times. That's why I used the word "unfortunate" rather than being too critical of any admin or organizers.

Is the rule as well

"The reserve day has been scheduled to ensure five full days of play, and it will only be used if lost playing time cannot be recovered through the normal provisions of making up lost time each day. There will be no additional day's play if a positive result is not achieved after five full days of play and the match will be declared a draw in such a scenario.

In the event of time being lost during the match, the ICC match referee will regularly update the teams and media about the way in which the reserve day may be used. The final decision on whether the reserve day needs to be used will be announced at the scheduled start of the last hour on the fifth day."

Yep, good clarification, thanks. Ie they're not gonna put in the reserve day if they lose one session on the third day.

Why not? How is losing a session on the fifth day any different to losing a session on the first day?

Isn’t about getting 450 overs in?

Edit: sorry, I read it as “fifth day” in the above post.

If they lose one session on the third day they'll probably make it up through "the normal" process. (Assuming the over rate chat doesn't go mad.)

The rule as posted by PHJ is clear enough to understand. If there's 5 full days of cricket, and the light permits on day 5 etc, then no need for a reserve day, but otherwise we go to a sixth for the last few overs.

It's a good rule - maximises the chance of a result, but doesn't fundamentally change the tactics (batting tempo, risk/reward decisions, declaration timing etc), which is what adding a sixth full day would do.
