Thoughts on the declaration?

I appreciate Lanning's attempts to liven up the game, but I think it was probably a bit too risky. In general chasing a medium-sized target in 50 overs feels a lot easier than taking 10 wickets in that time.

Plus Australia get plenty out of the draw as well, so it wasn't like it was a dice roll to get back in the series (which really shouldn't be criticised).

Women's test's haven't had a result in 5+ years, honestly think lanning's declaration is good for the sport, gives us a likely result.

I mean, England's highest chase in an ODer is lower this target. It was a risk but I don't have a problem with it.

Interesting that Women's tests are 4 days. I kind of think the unnecessary and slightly distorting declarations are what would also be seen if men's tests were reduced to 4 days... But there's a lot to be said for an Ashes Test where all three results are still possible going into the final hour.

Also all the rain yesterday was the biggest problem.

Odd decision from such an experienced captain like Lanning considering the draw would have meant England would have had to win the one-day series 3-0 which is unlikely.

Yeah, this is my view.

If Australia or England were up 1-0 in the Men's Ashes in the 5th Test and they were up by 300 runs with 50 overs left in the Test, would you want your side to declare? I get that Women's Tests is a different kettle of fish, but surely winning >>> entertainment? Especially if England win the Ashes?

I guess the main flipside is that England's never made over 250 to win an ODI before, so I guess it needed an ATG chase from England to pull it off. But equally it was plausible. Setting them 270 in 45 would've been basically implausible, for example.

FWIW if the series was tied or England were ahead I'd have no problems with it. But instead of "trying to get a result out of a bore draw" it's "give England a sniff of getting back in the series". The former I'd appreciate (like the 5th Test in the 2013 Ashes), the latter seems foolhardy.

Woah. Fair recovery from Australia in the last 5 overs. Be interesting to see what England do now.
