I'm not usually a believer in 'once you remove that one performance', but without his 6/29 Brathwaite averages 85 with the ball in Tests. More than anything that just questions what happened when he took those wickets.
Sri Lanka were going for the declaration and he kept darting it in. He really should not be bowling many overs.

I'm guessing that Roach hasn't dismissed many batsmen trying to reverse sweep him. Some innings that.

This over probably ends any discussion about batting on tomorrow.
C'mon Sam.

Scurran only knows how to bat one way so I'm guessing we'll have an hour or so before trying to nick one out tonight.

Yes. I'd rather like to see him trying to build an innings from time to time, although obviously this isn't one of those occasions. Ideally, he'd have spent the last three months batting at 4 or 5 for Surrey, but there you go.

Buttler's best chance is pretending this is a one dayer which is fair enough considering the situation

Kinda reassuringly English that even when cruising at 341/3 we still manage to find time for a mini-collapse of 4/50.

The world goes on...

Haha yeah but I would imagine that's way more common than the score doubling after that point. Or the rest adding 200 more. The same thing happens in 5/40 scenarios where instead of the tail being wrapped up quickly the team manages to get to 120 odd somehow.

I acutally don't mind this from Buttler so far that much (and I'm normally quick to rag on him). Yeah, it'd be great if he had scored more quickly but we haven't got such a huge score as to justify being totally reckless. If we reach 450 and he's still there I'll be irritated if he doesn't accelerate at that point, but that's a way off and may well not happen.

I'd me more annoyed with him if everyone else had found scoring fairly easy so far, but that hasn't been the case.

Fair but this is exactly the sort of surface where Buttler would come in at 4 for not many and blast a run a ball 50 as Root crawls along at the other end (with the other not having been good enough to stick around) if this had been an ODI.

That was a real 5/10 innings.

Only Stokes has hit the ball in the air well today.
Yeah, I may give it a 6, simply because it stopped a total lolapse, but nothing to change anyones mind either way. Will be interesting to see how he keeps, which might be more telling.

I can see why the West Indies stuck with the same pace attack - I wonder how good some of the backup is at Test level. In hindsight might have rested Gabriel with his knack for getting injuries and the quick turnaround but the worry is if West Indies don't bat out of their skin they could be entering the final match at 1-1 either looking to a pace attack who have played 2 matches in quick succession or a reserve bowling attack either scenario isn't ideal. Makes things so much better if we can get out of this with a draw with bad weather (which I still think is a huge ask) - the mini session before close of play will be crucial.
