I'm not disappointed at this defeat at all. The Windies showed in this game that even facing a massive task and with Lara out cheaply, they can fight on. Yes, only Gayle and Sarwan managed to fight, but they did it well and there are some positives to come out of this series. Needless to say, the fielding is not one of them.

The last over in the match by Fidel Edwards would have to have been the worst I have ever seen in international cricket. 4 byes followed by 4 wides. Terrible balls. The boy is quick and a good prospect but he really needs more coaching and experiance before he plays more tests.

Im sure the change would have been discussed and decied on earlier, with teh team sheet simply forgotten to be changed.
If they were discussed and decided that late, the team sheet would've been filled in with the starting XI - but it appears that it wasn't...

Off Caribbean Cricket website:

Sir Viv agreed to team change

West Indies captain Brian Lara has dismissed an explosive public claim that he "unilaterally" overruled chief selector Sir Viv Richards when he made a last-minute change to the final eleven for the fourth Test.

"I have the utmost respect for Sir Viv and to suggest that I would consider disrespecting him is unthinkable," Lara wrote in a column published in the Trinidad Guardian.

Everything is now forgiven I see.

On another matter I dont know if Merv Dillon pretends he is a great batsman or not, but tell me why he walks out to bat without an arm guard?

Why would he as the best bowler in the Caribbean IMO risk getting a broken arm? It is the last thing Lara needs is him to get injured.

Lara should talk some sense into him.

Well considering that they drop him every other match, I don't think it would make much difference whether he got injured or not. :P

From what I've read now, it appears the change was because of the pitch conditions - Viv agreed with it in retrospect.

This should perhaps be a separate topic, but here is my selection for West Indies' next test match (v England, starting 11th March). Obviously, it may change based on performances in the 1-day series and the Carib Beer Cup, but I'd be interested to see what people think.

Gayle
Devon Smith
Sarwan
Lara
Chanderpaul
Bravo
Jacobs
McGarrell
Dillon
Collymore
Taylor

If Devon Smith has a good Carib Beer Cup, he's got to start. From the little I've seen and read and based on his performances this season, Bravo could have the makings of a genuine test-level all-rounder and just edges out Dwayne Smith for me.

Dillon is a close call and perhaps Tino Best could force his way in after his blistering start to the season. Appparently, he's been working with Wayne Daniel on improving his control by tidying up his action and aiming to bowl a fuller length. I think we need a quartet of bowlers though, who can be relied upon to provide control. Dillon and Collymore are probably the best bets in this respect, given that Drakes has now run his course.

McGarrell was discarded too early and gets my nod, just ahead of Mohammed, for the spinner's slot.

McGarrell does not have the penetration for Test cricket. I'd much rather see a wrist spinner in there.

I'd also like to see Banks (if fit) in instead of Bravo if no spinner is player. If a specialist spinner is played, I'd prefer Wavell Hinds to Bravo still. Simply put, I'm not convinced that Bravo is ready for Test cricket as yet. ODI's perhaps.

Jerome Taylor will have to prove to me that he's the same bowler that he was before his injury for me to put him back in contention. If he doesn't succeed in the Carib Beer Cup, then I'd go for Tino Best or Ian Bradshaw. Maybe even the seemingly forgotten man, Fidel Edwards.

If Collymore is not 100% fit then he should be rested.

Devon Smith should definitely play.

As such, my tentative XI is:

CH Gayle
DS Smith
RR Sarwan
BC Lara *
S Chanderpaul
WW Hinds/OAC Banks
RD Jacobs +
D Mohammed/Ian Bradshaw
M Dillon
CD Collymore
JE Taylor/FH Edwards/Tino Best

Take your point on McGarrell, so wouldn't really quibble with Mohammed, though I'm not yet convinced about him. Taylor and Collymore would obviously have to prove form and fitness. I think Tino Best has done enough to merit another chance, whereas Castro appears to need a little more first class experience/technical work. He clearly has raw talent in abundance, but I'm not sure he'd benefit from continued exposure to test match cricket at this stage.

I haven't seen Bravo bat and he may be found wanting, but with Ganga (surely, please!) out of the picture and Banks and (possibly) Hinds injured, I think he could force his way in with a few more big scores. Having said that, I wouldn't be disappointed to see Hinds get a decent run at 6.

Why isn't Wavell Hinds selected to open again?

And I like the look of Mohammed. He looks to be an attacking bowler.

You're right about Ganga though. He has had his chance and the middle order needs some protection and a base to build on.

I would like to see Fidel Edwards to get some more grounding in first class cricket. He is a talent who was thrown to the wolves too quickly.

If they want to put a Trini in the team :D, I'd suggest either Imran Jan or Shazam Babwah ahead of Bravo.
