Man I hope Windies roll over and die for us in this Hamilton test. I don't actually have a memory of NZ winning a series against top 8 opposition since I returned to NZ in 2006. Am I wrong?

I really don't agree with McCullum batting five in ODIs; he should either be in the top three or used as a finisher. It's obviously different if he just gets promoted after a good start, but I think you need more of a manoeuvrer of the ball in the #5 role originally. I'd leave Ronchi out for Watling and go:

1. Martin Guptill
2. Jesse Ryder
3. Kane Williamson
4. Ross Taylor
5. BJ Watling+
6. Brendon McCullum
7. Corey Anderson
8. Nathan McCullum
9. Kyle Mills
10. Tim Southee
11. Mitchell McClenaghan

12. Luke Ronchi
13. Jimmy Neesham
14. Adam Milne
15. Tom Latham

I think Mike's team is pretty much what they'll go for, but there are too many hitters IMO.

This, but Watling in for Ronchi. Not particularly fussed on the reserve seamer either.
Ronchi is actually perfect at 7, assuming the top 6 hold up. Watling would have to come in at 5, meaning McCullum would be relegated to a finisher most of the time, and he is too good for that.

Edit: beaten by pews. Williamson and Taylor are the manoeuvrers of the side and McCullum is very good at rotating the strike and pinching singles

Watling is not a finisher and there is no space in the top 4 for him imo

EDIT: I think on NZ 300+ pitches, to win you need someone in your top 4 to bat big and long and have the remainder of the side swing around him in overs 30+.

Watling bats at five so he doesn't have to be a finisher and McCullum is best as a finisher, and is definitely anything but "too good" for the role. It is his best role.

Five means he can spend more time in the middle, and play a proper innings before going into finishing mode. If he falls before that there is still Anderson and Ronchi who are adept at slogging.

Mike didn't even have Munners itbt. Despite it in actual fact being a 13, I'd suggest Munners will be there. Forecast to boom it on a NZ ground with the new fielding requirements, both stances.

lets just wait and see how he goes this series then.
Nah his mindset has completely changed now.

Unless he comes to the crease with Ryder or Guptill already murdering, he's going to want to "express himself". I used to love it when he played the support act (e.g. with Oram) because he was so good at it.

Who cares, it's ODIs outside the world cup. Anderson's fitness is more important. They'll bring in Neesham for the overs anyway.

My gut says we should rest Southee for at least some of these ODIs. Would like to use him in rotation at most.

would rather we protected our best asset (and as good as Taylor is Southee is our key player)

NZ aim to bury brittle Windies | Cricket News | New Zealand v West Indies | ESPN Cricinfo

Pitch and conditions
Five of New Zealand's likely team play their domestic cricket for Northern Districts, so will know what to expect. BJ Watling, one of those, said a couple of types of surfaces have been tried this year; a drier pitch which proved pretty flat and one with more grass where the opposition were bowled out for less than 100. Perhaps something in the middle for the Test? The forecast is for most of the Test is warm and sunny.

Bowl first then if it is somewhere in between those two examples.
