Monty is a nickname that has been given to him by teammates and the press. Most cricket fans know his name is Mudshaden Singh Panesar. He doesn't have control what other people call him, it's not like he has refused to wear his Turban or renounced Sikhism.
I read in a newspaper interview that it's a name his family has used since he was a boy.
Yeah, that's what I'd heard too. Wisden says:

"Mudhsuden Singh Panesar was born on April 25, 1982, in Luton; his aunt's pet name for him, Monty, was the one that stuck."

Monty or Mudhsuden, had a tremendous series against the clueless Windies, but his real test would be against Indians. Now do you guys think Monty should be in the Twenty20and odi squads.

Well I won't comment on the Twenty20 side of things, but I do think he should be in the ODI squad. Not because he's a good ODI bowler, but simply because England have precious little other options anyway. Blackwell has a good record in ODIs but one thinks it's only a matter of time before he dires out a bit, and that goes double for Yardy. Idealy, Panesar would continue to develop his one day game in domestic cricket, but England don't really have that luxury at the moment.

So yes, I do think he should be in the squad. However I do not think he should be in the first XI unless the pitch is a real turner.

If Vaughan was still skipper, I'd say use him as the spinner. As it is, I guess Monty should play, if the conditions call for it

I think KP mixed jaffers with plenty of four-balls tbh
Yeah, he does - which is pretty much what you'd expect from someone who doesn't practice his bowling but has talent with it. He takes me as someone who could be much better if he devoted more time to it, although he obviously doesn't take it very seriously, and it's obviously better for England if he focuses on making his batting as good and as consistent as possible.

Yeah, great as it would be to have an all-rounder who could bat as well as KP does, it would surely detract from his batting. He's on the brink of being the best in the world and we've finally got a decent spinner, so sadly his bowling talents will go to waste.

I reckon he'll take a Test Michelle one day though

England Lions' game has finally gotten underway with England winning the toss and electing to bat first. I can not find out how many overs the game has now been reduced too but it is probably safe to say 20 overs per side is the likely game situation, given the time.

Good start by the Lions, currently going at around ten runs an over with league recruit Andrew Richardson getting some decent tap from Will Jefferson and captain Solanki.

England have been pegged back by Marlon Samuels, who has taken three wickets of his four overs for only eleven runs. Excellent figures and doubtlessly Marlon has been ‘chucking’ down his disconcerting 75mph quicker ball.

Crandon, whoever he is, is now bowling his 5th over - so 25 overs maybe? Should be on Sky. :@
