Marc 71178, but the point is that he wasn't given out with the LBW. It still doesn't matter.....he didn't touch the ball with the bat....and you know it's so easy when it comes to Lara. All they have to do is the LBW because Brian ALWAYS walks. But no, i suppose Harper thought that Rudi was taking too much of the spotlight. Bloody right when Lara kept his pads on till the end of the day. I smell a 75% match fee fine but who the hell cares??? HE WASN'T OUT and for the state of the game and the position of WI, Lara's wicket is a big deal.

Why would Lara be fined? He showed no dissent. He expressed disappointment, but he walked. AFAIK there's no rule against wearing your pads in the dressing room.

And if he'd been given out earlier, he wouldn't have had a chance to nick it.
And if Gayle wasn't given out earlier, he may not have had the chance for either.

Disappointed that Sarwan missed out
Sarwan looked like getting out to just about every ball he faced. It was really a stupid shot to try to work a ball from offstump to leg'. He should play straight more often early in his innings.

To e fair though, the previous over Harmison did trap him what looked suspiciously like LBW.
I was thinking and thinking trying to remember this plumb LBW that people are harping on about and couldn't recall it at all. Then I read Marc's match report and realized that it's the full toss that hit Lara on the pad... outside leg-stump. It was just marginal, but it hit him outside the legstump and he was playing a shot. Whether or not it would hit the stumps, it's not out. Thus there were no two wrongs in the situation.

Mr. Mxyzptlk, after the day's play Lara said something to the effect that it's hard for him to walk off when he knows he didn't touch the ball. Apparently that's what the fine may be all about.

He only has the right to feel aggrieved by that decision if he is equally grateful to Rudy Koertzen for reprieving him on a plumb lbw appeal a few minutes earlier.

Cheers,

Mike
Rubbish. If you are talking about the full toss, it hit him outside the line of leg stump. It wasn't plumb at all.

Revelation - I doubt Lara will be fined. True, he stayed at the crease longer than he should have, but he didn't show any dissent whatsoever. If he is fined it will be for slow over rate.

The quote I heard on TV6 news was "I find it hard not to walk when I know I'm out".

Yep that was the quote. I didn't hear the wuote on TV6 last night but cricinfo alluded that he may be fined for it.

Brian Lara and Pedro Collins may face disciplinary action from the match referee after issuing controversial statements at the end of the second day's play of the Lord's Test. Both were reacting to Lara's dubious dismissal earlier in the day, when he was given out caught behind by Daryl Harper – replays indicated that the ball had only brushed his pad.

"I still find it impossible not to walk when I know I'm out," Lara said in a statement, but Collins, addressing the press after the day's play, was far more forthright: "I saw the dismissal on tape and everybody saw that it missed the bat," he said. "But the umpires are here to do their jobs and the players have their jobs to do and you can't fault that." According to the ICC's Code of Conduct, players are explicitly barred from commenting on umpiring decisions. Ranjan Madugalle, the match referee, confirmed that neither of the two umpires – Rudi Koertzen being the other – had filed a complaint.

The controversy took some of the sheen off Ashley Giles, who took three wickets, including that of Lara, to finish the day with fine figures of 3 for 58 from 20 overs. "I went up because I thought he hit it and I guess Daryl Harper gave him out because he thought he'd hit it," Giles said, putting forward his take on the issue. "I'm not vain enough to rush straight back upstairs and look at my wickets, so I haven't seen it yet.

"I'm not going to jump off the top of Lord's," he continued, referring to his success on the second day. "I'm enjoying my cricket. I feel I have a lot to offer English cricket still but a lot of it is in the mind. A confident Ashley Giles is certainly going to do better than an Ashley Giles who is down. I still think that I'm probably the best spinning option in the country."

Fair enough - and if we we went back further something else would've changed.

My point was that Lara did get a lucky call when he quite probably should've been given just moments before...

The shot playing refers to hitting outside off though.

And the ball was a full toss therefore it hadn't pitched outside leg stump - that's the key here.

It was on course to take out the stumps and therefore LBW...

Good for him - this summer he's taken quite a step forwards IMO - picking up wickets at a reasonable average, and with the number of left handers in the WI line up, this could conceivably continue for a while longer!

It hit him outside the line of leg stump on the full though.
Here is the relevant law:
(d) the point of impact, even if above the level of the bails
either (i) is between wicket and wicket
or (ii) is either between wicket and wicket or outside the line of the off stump, if the striker has made no genuine attempt to play the ball with his bat

It is not wicket to wicket, hence cannot be given out.

When I saw it, I thought that it hit in line with leg stump but my memory is very hazy.

In laymen's terms, if it hit in line with leg stump (even a little bit, doesn't have to be full ball I don't think) it was out. Full stop.
I have to admit, I'd like to see it again but I'll take your words for it.
