So what's Bairstow like? Heard a bit of hype about him. A keeper who could be a specialist test batsman in his own right iirc?

Is Roach going to make the first Test? If he doesn't, it may be a bit of a massacre what with Edwards not finding form and Rampaul still returning from injury.

Yeah, definately a middle-order batsman. Has been sharing the gloves at Yorks for a while with Gerard Brophy, and right now is actually probably better in the outfield than behind the stumps.

Took him a long time to get his first FC century, as he was known for being the one who performed on a day where 80 was a good score. When he did get his first ton it was a double, last summer against Notts. Was a bit of a watershed innings, as he's really hit his straps after that.

Best part of his game are the lofted drives, he hits dead clean and straight. Very powerful batsman. Phenomenal ranga.

Yes I wasn't really seriously considering Root for England test yet - just has the potential and seemingly the motivation and ambition from what I've heard and read.

What has impressed me this season about Root is that he seems to be very comfortable against spin. In the couple of half centuries he made for Yorkshire this season he seemed to never get tied down by the spinners and was milking them for 4 or 5 runs an over. He was away with the Lions this winter( and I think Graham Thorpe) and he seems to possibly have taken a lot from that with lots of paddle sweeps and nudging the spinners into gaps to rotate the strike.

He also showed this improvement in the lions game. Carberry on his debut in Bangladesh was solid against the seamers but struggled against spin to rotate the strike and hit boundaries. Again in the Lions match Root was able to accelerate against a decent spinner (shillingford) and comfortably outscore a senior batsman who would generally be thought as a more attacking batsman.

This improvement by Root over one winter is a good sign and being proficient and able to rotate the strike against spin is vital to become a good international player.

Obviously still a long way to go and I feel like he needs to be a little more compact in his movements when batting against the seamers - but at the end of the day he needs a lot of runs and as you say a couple of seasons of county cricket to really become aware of his own game. One year of county cricket is nowhere near enough to put him into a test team but his successes with the lions and ability to adapt after only one year of county cricket really is impressive.

You mean he only plays it to deliveries that are going down leg anyway? Then fine.

Though I think my views on the various forms of dinky sweep well known.

Personally, I haven't seen him play like that, so I'm guessing. But he did make a one-day hundred in SL against Test spinners, which is not to be sniffed at.

England have really just noticed the mistake they made by letting Colly retire; no gingers in the team + lack of northerners was clearly a factor that went against them.

But no Bairstow's a proper talent good fielder been making plenty of runs and judging by what I've seen in his so far brief international career he reacts well to the high pressure.

If I'm honest not 100% convinced about Taylor just yet, would like to see him making plenty of runs if 1st Div. Cricket beforehand Trent Bridge is a tricky track so it'll be definitely by somewhere he will improve his batting overall.
