anyone know if Lara's day one effort is the most runs scored in a day?
Not even close. Bradman scored 309*, and more recently, Herschelle Gibbs scored 228 (out well before the close of play as well). In FC matches Lara holds the record with 390* (as part of his 501*).

great knock from the prince of port-of-spain, i expected him to come good but a double century whoaa thats a special effort. His handling of the spinners especially Warne was a sight.

He also has the most wickets though, and the top order at that.
A windies top order - 2 out of 3 of the wickets of which were thrown. I was making the point that Lee has to learn to bowl less expensively.

I wouldn't read too much into it - even McGrath went for ~4 per over. Lee was economical before Lara got stuck in.

Beleg

Not really.

If a bowler takes five wickets while going at six runs per over, It should be perfectly acceptable. Specially in a test match.

Fair point with the economy problems, though what do you mean by 2/3 wickets were "thrown"?

Recently knocked in the ICC Super series as well.

He has to improve from this. He has performed better in this series as far as economy goes but how he fares versus South Africans and latter in this regard will be important to see.

Today he was expensive in his first spell, inexpensive in his second and pretty costly latter on.

His first spell (might've been two spells) was 9-?-29-3, not particularly expensive. Anyway, Beleg's point is far more important - it's a Test match, so economy is pretty much irrelevant if he's taking wickets (which he was in his first spell).

Take a look at the square boundary length at Adelaide oval. Any bowler's going to be expensive there. Plus the Windies were on the attack. Plus express bowlers go for runs. I bet about 30 runs off Lee's bowling were edges.

Symonds catches crocodile style. This guy is probably the best fielder in the world, and he's catching the ball the first way I was taught NOT to catch a ball.

Well done Brian Lara and I hope to he breaks it tomorrow. And what about Darren Powell's hook shot that he got 4 off (bowler was Lee), that was a decent shot for a tail ender facing a geniune speedstar.

And what is about Sarwan and batting in Australia? He either can't buy a run (like last time) or get a start and throw it away (ie like his hook shot which he should have kept it down when he isn't that good of a hooker of the ball) and his shot selection needs to get better.

Barney Rubble

Not really following this series closely, but Lara - wow. Hats off to the man, a special talent indeed. Also, it sounds like Symonds was posing some real dangers with the ball for a while - I've always thought he was a little hard done by to only play as few Tests as he has, so it's nice to see him getting some praise (from Cricinfo at least).

Aus are probably lucky that Lara was given out in the previous 2 tests to 50/50 lbw decisions.
