Cricketer Of The Year
This shouldn't come as a surprise. I've mentioned this before too, in Canada no one outside of the South Asian and West Indian community even has the faintest idea as to what cricket is or all its rules. Hence, 75 percent of the players come from Toronto region, and the rest from Vancouver, Montreal, other large cities with a significant South Asian/West Indian community. The Canadian side has a quite a few India, Sri Lankan and Pakistani expats.
Ice hockey and North American sports (basketball, baseball, etc.) are what kids here grow up with. Cricket in Canada is surviving solely on the interest shown by the minority community. Also, in recent times there has been a surge of British immigrants to Canada and, thus, we have seen a growing amount of British players join the leagues.
Yes there's a lot of Pakistanis that play cricket here in Canada. But yeah, it shouldn't come as a surprise. I've played for West Indian clubs here in Toronto, and despite them being able to speak English with a Canadian accent, they choose to bring out their Jamaican accents. But do remember this is the immigrant community here in Canada, so they've grown up in other parts of the world. The majority of new generation of Canadians with a South Asian/West Indian background, who've been born here, are for the most part unaware of cricket's existence in Canada.I'm told that there are so many Pakistanis in the team, they generally converse on the field in Urdu. Not a criticism, just notable.
