Geez Louise, how quickly form can turn. A week ago, SL were the international whipping boys and people were wondering out loud whether they were even going to be competitive in this series. Now they're the form team and doing everything well; bowling, batting and fielding and about to take a bonus point off the Aussies. Brilliant stuff.
Bit of a leap on the bonus point there. It's possible, but Australia only need another 40 odd runs to avoid it.

One thing that I thought I would mention - Australia hardly ever chase. The last time they did it was in England. I would be interested in seeing some stats for the last few years regarding the number of times they have chased (say since Ponting took over) and how many games they have won chasing.

All three teams seem to be really struggling with the chase. This is the fourth time that the team batting second has been completely crushed. The only exception was South Africa chasing 228 but even then they needed some big hitting in the end to do it. Funny how things have changed from the NZ-Aus series when NZ made chasing 300+ look routine and almost pulled it off two games in a row.
It also shows how well New Zealand have played since that first game.

Credit to SL, they have really put it together today BUT

Australia deserve to get their arses kicked, how many times does the chopping and changing come back to bite us on the ***.

Lets have a look at some of the clangers managed today.

Martyn, not a openers ****, third shocker shot in 3 games, he's determined to get the flick from the OD team it seems...........he is clueless.

Katich needed runs before today, but they drop a bloke who got 94 for the Kat who just isn't cutting it.

The opening partnerships in general, when was the last time one lasted for 10 overs..... the top and middle orders are having to face the new ball EVERY game.

THE BOWLING...............Ponting is a idiot for allowing that attack to take the field........3 years ago the same thing happened to Australia at the hands of SL and we have learned zero in 3 years.

Hopes.........embarassing, Dorey..........worse. WTF were they thinking.

3 of Australia's frontline bowlers had played 30 matches between them......... this shows a lack of respect for SL and a overinflated opinion of the players in the Aust team, as soon as Lee didn't knock over 3-4 early, they were in trouble and never looked like winning the game.

Australia have managed in one game to run SL back into form and place themselves under massive pressure for the rest of the series. Why do the selectors feel compelled to change the team so massively in Australia, it is the one series that Australian fans get to see and be involved in and we are consistently seeing second string players getting a game.

Why wasn't Gilchrist rested for the NZ series, why do we not get to see him? If they are desperate to blood new players then do it in the numerous meaningless series that will happen all year, s**t there are 7 one dayers in SA for goodness sake, why do Aus fans have to put up with this all the time.

last time they chopped and changed, the same thing happen, we got beaten consistently, when will these peanuts ever learn!

One final point, how bad must Gillespie be if he can't get a game in front of Dorey, Hopes, Bracken or Clark.

good work by SL, to bad tony greig cannot admit it
Can he ever admit it? He's shockingly biased. Even makes Ian Smith look objective.

They were about 60 runs short at the time of posting and 8 down; not that much of a leap with Murali and Bandara still bowling, mate.

Even now, they still need to score at 6-per-over.

Huh? Tony Greig loves the South Africans and Sri Lankans. There isn't one match this VB Series, and including the SA test matches, that Tony Greig has supported Australia. He's always supported South Africa or Sri Lanka. Hell he would be the first to admit it. That's why Mark Taylor and the rest always ask him, who is he going to be supporting this summer, SA or SL. Either way, he doesn't want Australia to win.

You're right.

Ponting's philosophy as an ODI captain has always been to bat first. He enjoys having the runs on the board, and he has a bowling attack that he backs to defend virtually anything. Australia regularly win with moderate to small scores on the board.

Ditto every captain since Greg Chappell, really. AB in particular was a huge proponent of batting first and setting a target then squeezing the life out of the opposition with tight bowling, hence the proliferation of tight, seam-up bowlers in his time. Craig McDermott was probably his first attacking weapon in ages in the early 90's.

He never goes for Australia IMO.
I was talking about South Africa...he was awful in the game that SL won.

And he seemed to me today to only want SA to give Australia a challenge in this series. Might be wrong though.

he did once in the test go for south africa. I forget who the other commentator was but i remember when South Africa were winning and Tony Greg said it doesnt take much for me to support South Africa ( something like that)
