And since Bandladesh have always struggled , it never really got my attention as i never really followed their progress, so to find that they were actually fav's for WC comes as a big surprise for me.
You? Slagging off Pakistani fans? Never! I mean, you always take Indian victories and defeats with grace and never in your 4 years on this forum have you posted inflammatory comments have you? What's that? India loses matches? So they're not omnipotent? Yes, this truly is a figament of my imagination.

Sorry tale of pak seniors

Pakistan seniors forget juniors before World Cup final

By Waheed Khan

KARACHI: The Pakistan team management showed once again on Saturday that it still has a long way to go to learn the art of being gracious in defeat and learning the art of handling the media circus diplomatically and with politically correct statements.

Indian skipper Rahul Dravid didn’t forget the fact that the Indian juniors were going to play against Pakistan in the ICC Youth World Cup final on Sunday and wished them all the best on behalf of the team before starting to take questions at Saturday’s news conference.

"On behalf of the Indian team I wish the under-19 team the very best in the final. I hope they will play good cricket and win the trophy," he said.

In contrast Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq had no good wishes for the junior players and didn’t talk on the Youth World Cup at all.

Which was surprising given that the junior teams of both countries play the final on the same day as their seniors clash in the final one-dayer in Karachi.

And a Pakistan victory over India in the World Cup would come as a big morale booster at this particular time. But then what has become obvious in the last two weeks is how one or two good or bad results can change the behaviour of a team and its players.

One has noticed a definite change in the way Dravid now talks to the media while in contrast Inzamam who until the Karachi Test could no nothing wrong is now constantly spending his time making snide remarks about how the outlook of the people and media changes when a team starts to lose. Saturday’s press conference was no exception and when asked if he felt that the Indian think tank had planned better for the one-dayers then their Pakistani counterparts, Inzi’s answer was: "When we won the Karachi Test our think tank was the best. Now it is bad."

One or two more such remarks followed also on the criticism being made by some former players on the performances of the team.

One is surprised that even after playing for 15 long years and being around as captain for the last three years, Inzamam has still not learnt the art of being graceful in defeat and learning to face the realities of life which is "No one likes a loser."

So why the moaning and complaining. All teams and cricketers are professionals and earn money that others can only dream off.

They are public property and the hope of entire nations rest of them. Newspapers don’t dedicate pages and pages to cricket nor do television channels spend hours discussing the sport and sportsmen only to see their team lose badly. Inzamam should know that when a nation can erupt into celebrations over one win it can get upset or angry and the media can forget its condescending ways in defeat specially when it comes because of some basic tactical errors.

When the players can get bonuses for winning they should be prepared to take the worst on losing. Atleast one can feel good about one thing done right by Inzamam and his players to announce a monthly stipend of Rs 10,000 for former Olympian goalkeeper Mohammad Qasim who is fighting a losing battle against cancer.

Meanwhile lauding the under-19 concept, Dravid said it had helped in developing quality junior players. "A lot more junior cricket is being played now than in my days.

The players get international exposure at a young age through the under 19 and India A tours. It goes a long way in their development," he said.

India is lucky that they don't have to face Bangladesh. look at BD U19's recent records in last 25 matches agains the U 19 team of different test nations, you will see why they were considered one of the favorite. Or, read this thread from the begining. Everyone considered Bangladesh as favorite. Its just that, they played a bad match after playing so many good matches, which threw them out of the tournament. This defeat against England was infact a shock result. As they have managed to beat this England team more than 10 times just befrore they came to the tournament.

if you had compared of the results of BD and India played against the same competitors, Srilanka and West Indies, you would have known that Bangladesh is no way behind than India, as far as result and performance are concerned.

Results against same team they played :
India v Sri Lanka -- India won by 4 wickets
India Under-19s v West Indies -- India won by 126 runs

Bangladesh v West Indies - Bangladesh won by 4 wickets
Bangladesh v Sri Lanka Bangladesh won by 98 runs

That's simply a reporter/journo with an agenda and short of a story. Perhaps Inzy had more important matters on his mind. As for this:

Saturday’s press conference was no exception and when asked if he felt that the Indian think tank had planned better for the one-dayers then their Pakistani counterparts, Inzi’s answer was: "When we won the Karachi Test our think tank was the best. Now it is bad."
That's exactly right. If the journos don't like Inzy questioning their speculation, then perhaps they should just write on the facts.

Congrats to Nepal. What a poor showing from NZ at this tournament though. Not just the fact that they lost so many games, but how they lost. Sometimes even how they won!

Bangladesh were one of the favourites for this tournament after India. Just look at the Afro-Asian cup where the only team they lost to convincingly was India, and they beat Pakistan, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Also, they beat England and Sri Lanka winning 11 u-19 matches in a row. Only India, did better off than Bangladesh in the u-19 level having beaten Australia, another favourites 4-1 in a 5-match series and having beaten them in the warm-ups as well. Pakistan losing to Bangladesh wasnt a disgrace at all, now very soon it wont be a disgrace at the senior level for teams like India, Australia and Pakistan to lose to Bangladesh as they are a up and coming team.

God I hope so. I am sick of seeing records such as Zaheer Khan and SRT for the 10th wicket against them, then going "Oh, it was against Bangladesh".

Well the only time Bangladesh u-19 and India u-19 met recently was in Vizag at the AFro Asia tourney and India won that fairly comfortably.

I hope India win but Pakistan slight favourites imo following their very impressive win over Australia.

India's middle order ( Shukla, Das and Chawla) have looked a little dodgy in the tournament and that is a worry.

JASON

Cricketer Of The Year
Have to say the Best 2 Teams at Under 19 level year in year out have reached the Final .
(ie India and Pakistan).

India at U19 level are IMO the equivalent of Australia at Full Test/ODI level :) :) - They are absolutely the power house at U-19 level only closely followed by Pakistan.

Everyone else is far far behind. And the amazing thing is that these two Countries do it with different players every 4 years (unlike the Aussie senior team).

Anyway for the record the two teams I supported have done reasonably well. Bangladesh finishing 5th their best ever finish at U-19 level beating SL (I am happy they beat SL :) )
and Nepal winning the Plate !!
(The Plate means more to Nepal than NZ -who IIRC have won the World Cup before .)

All in all a pretty happy World Cup for a neutral Sri Lankan.
