Jeez, the WTA better hope that the Williams sisters and Sharapova dont retire anytime soon

Without them (and obviously the first 2 are faaaaaaaaaaaar more important), they'd be left with a group of complete hacks that inspire zero confidence and have about as much charisma as a pair of worn socks

Doubt Murray would be too displeased to see Gonzales out. Match point now...and a double

Fair to say the Scot looked pretty decent today, though Troicki was poor

Fantastic display of defensive tennis. The great thing about Murray is that he always makes his opponent play really well to win.

Annoyed about Melzer going out :(

This won't sound good, but I have issues with the women tennis players being paid as much as the men. I can understand it from a drawcard point of view, maybe...but the quality's not there. I guess it can be argued that when you get two good women tennis players up against each other you get a match worth watching. Rarely do you see the brilliance that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, etc etc can dish out in the men's draw though.

I just have a problem with someone earning the same amount when usually the first week of their draw is a cakewalk, with the odd exception. And they're not playing as much tennis.

Hope Sam Stosur does well this year though (haven't seen the overnight scores so I presume she's still playing) and little Lleyton goes deep into the second week. Not in the women's side of the draw.

I'm happy to have them paid equally to avoid them increasing women's tennis to best of 5 tbh.

And Stosur was beaten comfortably by Ivanović last night.

Jankovic would have to have her own personal physician employed to sit with the umpire if that was the case.

Thanks for the update too, I haven't made it that far this morning in the online newspapers yet.

Yar. Nadal said they should get paid the same when they play the same amount of tennis. Well personally i think it's unfair that they get paid the same, for a lot of reasons, but i don't care enough to wish any more of the abomination that is women's tennis on the world.

... can only agree with Nadal here, tis only fair after all.... cannot think why they think they should get the same money, when they dont play the same amount of tennis(if that makes sense... just got up after gettin in late last night, not really awake yet...) ..wouldnt make me watch any more womens tennis than i do now tho,its not at its best right now...

...and glad to see Murray still in there....

Can't imagine why women shouldn't be playing 5 sets at Grand Slam level in 2009. I mean, the men only really do it in Grand Slams, at the other tournaments it is mostly 3 sets (I think).

Yeh outside of slams the only time men play 5 setters are Davis Cup and some Masters Series Finals.

Combination of scheduling and the spectacle. I don't think there's a real push for people to watch the women play, and there are only so many courts. You can't have two five setters in a night session, otherwise the later game will last until 3-4 in the morning.

Personally i'm looking forward to Verdasco-Karlovic. Verdasco's a quality player, better than Tsonga IMO, and I always find it fascinating to see how people react to playing someone like Ivo.

Personally I'd want the economic side of the WTA and the ATP to be run separately. Hence, players would get paid based on the money-making potential of their sport, regardless of ***. It's not like it would cause a horrendous reduction in women's prize money, because despite my personal opinions on prank-tennis there's no doubt that it's extremely popular.

..sounds a good idea.....although I am always quite surprised at the popularity of womens tennis( aside from the fact that some guys watch it just for the pretty players...)

..and Haas takes the first set 7-6....

..oh and thanks BBC for taking this game off the tv and saying i can watch it on line...pfft!!
