Thiem out in the First Round. Osaka through but fined and threatened with expulsion for not attending the press conference.
Whilst I am not particulary enamoured with what Osaka is doing here, this is just a ridiculous over-reaction, obviously it being the FTF you would expect it though *gallic shrug*.

They will back down. Osaka is absolute box office.

If it was maybe anyone else outside the top 3 in the men or Serena the tour would not back down, but the perks of been a massive ****ing draw is you get much more leeway than say Daniel Evans.

I don't really see the issue anyway , she doesn't enjoy speaking to the media so why should she?

Great chance for Saba to get to the final, a very handy draw also.

Thiem has been abysmal for so long, not sure what has gone wrong.

Tsitsipas has a lovely draw, arguably toughest opponents on that side is Ruud and Zverev.

If I was Naomi Osaka, I would just go full Raikkonen when it comes to the media. Show up, but just say pretty much nothing, blatantly half arse it

wow ok...that's sad...anyway i am glad she explained the situation better while exiting...if she had done this at the beginning instead of the glib, vague pre-tournament tweet, the organizers may have been more sympathetic to the situation...

I'm not sure if they would have - they stated in a statement of their own that not carrying out her media obligations gave her an unfair advantage over her competitors -

“We want to underline that rules are in place to ensure all players are treated exactly the same, no matter their stature, beliefs or achievement. As a sport there is nothing more important than ensuring no player has an unfair advantage over another, which unfortunately is the case in this situation if one player refuses to dedicate time to participate in media commitments while the others all honour their commitments."

Intriguing as I've heard some players say they've been bordering on tears in interviews and it almost seems 'normal' in tennis whereas I just wonder if it is so 'normal' in other sports - I don't think it is in the other sports that I follow

if she decides not to do any at Wimbledon, then it could really interesting (unlike tennis press conferences in general ) they won't want to back down, but Osaka is the only box office star they have under 30 and understandably their will be plenty of good will towards her from the masses.

Pretty cool how Italian tennis is producing so many good young players , although obviously a shame that their seems to be **** all coming through in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and to a lesser extent USA (Some good young female players,,,the men its Opelka (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz).).

Having the players manager or a 'media representative' come in and sit along with the player for the presser might be an amicable solution for both parties (players and tennis federation) and an option I guess many players might appreciate. Not sure if media will be happy with this though.

The rules at Wimbledon are no different, and nor will their attitude be. She probably won’t enter. Her record on grass is very poor and her chances slim. She won’t put herself through it if she’s feeling unwell.

Petra Kvitova has also had to withdraw from the French Open after a freak accident when making her way from her press conference today. Sounds like Osaka was onto something.

i watched bits of Ruud v Davidovich, absolute legend of clay mudfest complete with Davidovich Fokina somehow needing FIVE match points to round it off
