It just seems odd to me how newer players haven't emerged for top rankings in tennis for a while now. Sampras emerged quite young as did Referee and Nadal. Where is the next big champion, I wonder.
Average ages for breaking through are increasing, and careers are lengthening. Muller is playing his career-best tennis at 34. Mischa Zverev is playing his career-best tennis and he's fairly old now. Federer and Nadal don't look like going away any time soon. Ferrer was playing at a high level until quite recently. Wawrinka also has been a late bloomer.

It's quite a contrast when you consider that McEnroe, Wilander, Becker, Edberg etc. were more or less done winning Slams at 25 or so. Borg retired at 25. Sampras really struggled after 2000 except for a couple of US Open runs. I think it is good to see great players having longevity and the hunger to carry on. The younger ones just need to get to their level rather than waiting for them to go away.

Whatever it takes!!!
Modern fitness levels mean the age till when players can be at their best is getting higher and higher. The issue will be more on the mental fatigue side than the physical alone, I feel. And Sachin made a great point that post 30, the recovery time your body needs becomes longer. So it is possible to keep going at the highest level as long as you take care of your body and schedule till the late 30s, I feel.

I guess tennis has evolved a fair bit as a sport and you need more experience now, much like you do for batsmen a lot of times who blossom a lot later in their careers.

Wimbledon starting today with Djoko under the roof. I don't know what the forecast is but I wonder if they might end up playing all five singles matches on Centre Court today if the rain continues for too long.

Depending on length of the mens game it could be very possible. Be much better to do that than have the games on court 1 on and off all day with loads of stoppages.

Delighted for Venus, last few opponents were tricky especially today and has played really well without dropping a set. :D

I have money on Coco to win this outright (posted I backed her a few weeks ago, so not aftertiming!), but she is pretty unlikable isn't she?

No idea why they'd do it, just feels that way.

Anyway, brilliant to see Venus in the semis. What a story it'd be for her to win the title.

Although she isn't British Konta does at least sound surprisingly like the Queen is her aunt Betty after five years. Can't stand Navratilova in the commentary box droning on about nothing.

This is going to get pretty tiresome, been here since she was 14, a dozen years, chose to play for us, has been in our system, much more British than many cricleters.

Unless she loses to the hobbit, then she can go back to been Australian-Hungarian obviously, as is the tradition.

Pretty good tie-break from Halep, just kept on making Konta play, and that point at 1-1 was sublime.
