hmm, not much bowling behind him, hasn't played a test in ages, reckon he might get some ODIs and then possibly could feature in Aus

Would you make any changes to the current XI?

Thinking Pradeep needs to find a place somewhere (Rajitha hasn't done himself any favours despite being an able fielder :p) and hate to say it but Thirimanne should be opening, does Roshen Silva find a place in the team too? DM de Silva has done **** all lately
Thirimanne has done **** all ever. Gunathilaka out, Roshen in, push everyone up one IMO.

The problem exists in the top order - you can't fix that by slotting in another middle order player, the failures of Kaushal Silva are killing us IMO, we don't have a viable 2nd opener or a consistent no. 3, plus Mendis is out of form.

I know Thirimanne has an awful record, but I see little choice if Chandimal and Matthews are going to camp out at 5 and 6

It's literally the exact same lineup you just advocated except with de Silva in for Thirimanne.

Well yeah but the answer is that they shouldn't be doing that. One of them (Chandimal for mine) should be batting four.

De Silva is batting way out of position at 3 IMO, particularly in these conditions, I can live with Mendis in the top order though given the dearth of top order talent. I think the best option from the current squad would look like

Dimuth
Thirimanne
Mendis
Chandimal
Matthew
de Silva
Dickwella

de Silva seemed quite comfortable marshalling the lower order and adapting his game to various situations down the order than when I've seen him bat 3

God, this SL team is absolutely ****ing dire.

That said, gun innings by Latham though, really paced his innings well and didn't throw it away till the end.

Chandimal, Mathews and Roshen Silva should be your 4, 5 and 6

I don't know the long-term merits of Kaushal Silva, but recalled and then binned after 2 tests seems harsh - especially with SL's long touring schedule coming up

Amazed that Chandimal is batting at no 6, would've thought at this stage of his career 4 if not 5 would be his default position, especially with him not keeping.

Have to say such a monumental knock (spread over 2 days no less) was least expected from Latham given he was coming off a very ordinary personal series just over a week ago. Impressive!

He spent 2 years averaging about 25, his rope was up even if he's a guy who potentially has the technique to help Dimuth see off the new ball.

I don't see a place for Mendis, DM de Silva, Matthews, Chandimal and Roshen in the same XI, all of them are glorified no 6 batters and the youngest are getting thrown into the top order

Southee looking very floaty in his first couple of overs today, and down at 125 km/hr. Really shouldn't be down on pace after only bowling a few overs in the last two days.

We've gone to the short ball attack very quickly this morning. The ball's only 15 overs old, would've liked us to at least go a few overs looking for swing and edges behind.

Agree with all the posts saying Chandimal needs to stop hiding at 6, especially while Mathews is relatively low at 5 (even if he's batted most of his career there). Chandimal has the ability and experience to bat 4, so needs to take more responsibility.

NZ radio comms continue to be somewhat positive about the Mexican Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendez - I'm talking about you, Richard Petrie.
