I think so.

But nice to see Jon-Jon Smuts get a call-up, he's been one of those guys whose worked hard at domestic level for years, and he had a good T20 campaign this season.
He does deserve it. Just suits limited overs cricket with his all-round ability. Those slow left-armers of his have been tough to get away for years.

As for the third Test, I think this is the XI that will start:

Cook, Elgar, Amla, Duminy, Du Plessis, Bavuma, De Kock, Philander, Parnell, Olivier, Rabada.

Though I can see them taking a chance with De Bruyn in place of Amla/Bavuma.

Call it giving them a rest with the series won, blooding new talent in home conditions, with little pressure.

Also - I like Smuts, good honest player. Not sure if he is quite up to the task, but then there are question marks over a lot of those players in that squad.

I still think he'll play. His going all right at the moment. Might as well keep giving him game time whilst he's in good form. Parnell philander maharaj rabada is a nicely balanced attack

Langevledt saying they're not scared to play a spinner but our history shows we normally go with 4 seamers and this pitch has hardly seen any sun for over a week.

I think four seamers would've made sense if three of SA's best five weren't unavailable for various reasons. If you could find an excuse to play four of Steyn/Philander/Rabada/Abbott/Morkel (or even three of those guys with another fourth seamer) then you'd be mad not to take that excuse, but Maharaj has been really solid to the point where I don't think I'd leave him out in order to play both Parnell and Oliver.

Light doesn't look too good, but I like the idea of a covered venue for test cricket. Good initiative.

Going to try and get away with percentages here to allow for AB to come in for Duminy/Bavuma ?
Probably percentages, but maybe also a way of selecting players to try to convince them to stick around and/or make it harder for them to represent another country?

I can report from Johannesburg that skies are clear today, so the pitch will probably get some sun today. Still reckon it'll be a typical Wanderers 'green mamba' though.

Think Maharaj will get a game but four SA fast bowlers on that pitch would be something to watch I reckon.

How about Parnell for Duminy, pushing everyone up one and Parnell in at 7. Duanne straight swop for Abbott?

just reading reports in news in SL that malinga has withdrawn from the ODI/T20 tour due to apparently not fully recovering from a bout of dengue fever..not been confirmed yet tho..

I wouldn't be too unhappy with that. 7 is perhaps one spot too high for whichever of Parnell/Maharaj/Philander, but that's offset by having one of them come in at 9. Although that adds an additional complication to the "What do we do when AB returns?" question as there would no longer be Duminy to make way for AB, and dropping Bavuma has more serious implications in terms of the numbers.

Parnell would probably be OK at seven, but I must say I like having QDK there. He's our Gilly - you have a team 150/5 and the next guy in averages 50. Must be so demoralising.

The only all-rounder in the franchise system that could fit in at six that I can think of right now is Dwaine Pretorius. He's probably fairly close to the Test side. Not sure he's the answer though.

Parnell's batting has improved a great deal... think he would avg at least what Duminy avg`s now. And I feel QDK at 6 is good giving him the best opportunity to bat with other batsmen rather than just the tail. I`m not going to worry about when deVillers returns until he returns.

Anyway none of this is likely to happen.

Hope there is a decent crowd for Amlas 100th

Man that shortened tour the last time India toured SA really wrecked a few things, Jaques Kallis final test would have been at Newlands and Amlas 100th would probably have been at a packed Newlands as well

It's a tough one re: the spinner. Or maybe not. It's Wanderers where it swings for 90 overs in a day and there has been inclement weather to boot. Spinners have never really been needed.

Kuhn and JJ Smuts have been around the traps so I don't think they will represent another country but I see what you trying to say.

In that squad I wouldn't say there is the next QdK or Rabada besides maybe de Bruyn/Ngidi. Obviously Phehluwkayo also has a bit about him too.

Just odd a fringe ODI player like Dwaine Pretorius isn't there. Chris Morris needs to get overs under his belt as well.

But percentages definitely looks like the plan while they testing where some players are quite clearly.
