Because he's not a very good ODI bowler, that's the mentality of Bracewell and the selectors.
Who knows what Bracewell is thinking these days.
Is there something we don't know regarding Franklin? Is he under an injury cloud? Or, in the style of Jason Gillespie, are we going to drop guys who score 100's and take wickets in an overseas series so we can bring in a medium paced pie thrower like O'Brien?
Bracewell said the other day they were picking on form rather than overall test record or ability (or something). Which is hardly good to go by since there's been 2 first class matches so far in the State Championships. If they include NZ players in England, then Vincent should've been included and Franklin should be a shoe in.
O'Brien is 4th (can I predict he won't stay 4th for long?) behind Mason, Gillespie and Thompson in the State Championship wicket taking tally.
Gillespie was in the squad not long ago, played in the A series in Australia and had success. Went to India and played in the warm up matches before the CT and performed well. Yet he's dropped. Why?
Thompson also looks a good prospect as well. Certainly looks better than O'Brien.
If O'Brien plays...I'll..I'll be so mad that I'm not sure what I'd do.
A boycott would be a bit much, but seriously...I wouldn't rate him in the top 5 currently fit seamers in the country.
I even rate Martin ahead of him, that's how poor I think he is.
And if he plays the first test, mark my words, he won't take more than 4 wickets for the whole test. I can envision him being a jammy bastard and taking 2 tailenders in each innings and then Bracewell will say he's performed well and pick him for the next test. And ODI's. Ugh.
And now that I've said that, he'll probably take some 5'fers and get a long run in the team.
I really am torn. I'm worried that he'll be like Kyle Mills, who looked distinctly ordinary at international level, yet stepped up in the last year or so into a fine ODI and test bowler. Do I want O'Brien to do this? Deep deep down, I wish him luck because he gets to do what a lot of us will never do and represent their country at international level. And I'd like us to have an international class bowler who can really trouble batsman and generate pace.
O'Brien just doesn't seem to fit that description.

always thought Kiwis were great sporting people, but some have started resorting to the great Australian Mind games strategy again -such as the likes of Tony Veitch on Radio Sport and some of his colleagues.(ie Ian Smith etc.)
I say this because they have resorted to digging up the same old skeleton from the closet about Murali being "a Chucker " etc..
Pretty disappointed to be honest. This is the sort of thing you expect from Aussies before any Test or ODI with their huge Media Bandwagon and back room Spin doctors working overtime - expected much better from the Kiwis.. Most have been very decent and fair ... but you find the odd muck raker - a la Robert Craddock like rubbish mongrels even here..
Disappointing .
Where?
