3 50s in 90 odd games and an average of >20 doesn't really seem good enough to be classed as an all-rounder in ODI cricket.

I think Oram considers himself to be a better batsman than a bowler and would like to think that he is an all-rounder. His average is poor because of the circumstanes he enters into and sometimes on occassions has to carry a bit of pressure to help finish an innings. If I remember correctly he smashed the Australians for a few last year in an ODI with two sixes that ome to mind. Oram is really the only all-rounder in our squad apart from Vettori and Franklin to a lesser extent. Styris I would think is a semi-part time bowler although he tends to bowl in most ODIs being quite economical and sometimes taking crucial wickets. This batting line-up worries me because of its lack of cover at the tail-end that I must say New Zealand often relies on to post a decent score or take them past a teams total.

McCullum to me has looked confident and in control at the start of the innings except for when he tries to cut balls that obviously can't be (He did it 9 times in the Twenty20 and missed or something). I think he will have relative success at the top of the order. Hopefully he can capitilise on his chances in that position.

Oram has definately underachieved with the bat in ODI's. His main problem is that he keeps getting injured so he doesn't get to consistently play to pull some decent form together.

He's shown he can bat in test cricket and i've read stories about him wanting to bat higher up in the order in ODI cricket, but unless he actually scores more runs in ODI's...i can't see him justifying that claim.

Why the hell is James Marshall in the side? I cannot believe there is a chance we will waste an ODI to open with him. Why didn't they call in Jamie How as the next specialist opener if Astle is out.

They should have dropped J.Marshall and called up McMillan and How if you ask me.

Also I think Mark Gillespie will come good. We should just put the 1st ODI down to nerves, but his form earlier in the year during the top end series showed that he can rattle the batsmen..he dismantled a few of the Aussie 'A' batsmen a couple of times. The real concerns for me are James Franklin and Andre Adams who have played plenty of ODI's now. Franklin scares me everytime he runs in to bowl right now, I think he should be far away from the ODI setup until he gets his line & length sorted.

Mills is back bowling for Auckland today. He might get a game or two for NZ against Sri Lanka but I reckon they'll let him play for Auckland for a few more games and then take him to Australia.

Did anyone see that Ian Butler bowled 5 overs the other day for Northern? I thought he couldn't bowl at all. Im guessing he was just bowling medium pace, but I guess it's a decent sign that he can at least bowl.

Yes, with Mills and Styris back playing state cricket it will be an interesting round, but I doubt either one of them will play in the remainder of this series. It'll also be interesting to see how Jesse Ryder goes for Wellington. I really think the first ODI against Sri Lanka showed just how badly we need McCullum at the death. Anyone can bash the ball around while the field is up, but McCullum is one of the few who can perform the role consistently of the death hitter. So an opening spot is probably still open, though then again Craig Cumming also seems to be making a bright start to the season.

my SL team for the next game:
sanath
tharanga
mahela
sanga
marvan
dilshan/kapugedara
chamara
maharoof for dilhara
vaas
malinga
murali
I know why you would want to drop Dilhara, but consider the pitch at Napier and the fact that all the bowlers bar Vaas got served up by the batsmen, you will see he is not alone.

Queenstown is a different pitch , and conditions will suit seamers fine . This is definitely a pitch SL will have to play 4 seamers to make use of the conditions or they will get done.
Maharoof must come in to the Team for this game but IMO at the expense of Dilshan , and not Dilhara.

It would be nice to see Mills and Bond opening the bowling for NZ and perhaps Styris in the Team as well.(I thought he was playing this weekend in the State shield as well)

Playing either Perera or Fernanado just for the sake of a fourth fast bowler is a bad move. They both are horrible and are only going to gift NZ some easy runs. And if the pitch is seamer friendly might as well stack up an extra batsmen and hope that someone scores.

hmm..difficult situation really. Who to choose? an extra batsman or a bowler? i'll let the management decide. :D

Considering the "extra bowler" is IMO a worse one day bowler than the "extra batsman" and obviously a worse batsman too, I think the decision is easy.

Why is playing spin really that important in New Zealand? All we have is Vettori to spin the ball unless they include Jeetan

That doesn't make sense really. Why does it matter how many spinners NZ have?

Well it would be more of a benefit for a player that plays spin well to play sri lanka because of the number of spinners they use whereas New Zealand only has generally one option per match.

Sigh. Looks like James Marshall will open the batting with McCullum. So now we have two inexperienced "openers" chasing a target. And an inexperienced Taylor batting at 3, although there's no doubting his ability (unlike McCullum and J. Marshall).

Oh, and Peter Fulton batting at 4... When will Bracewell learn? This all-or-nothing approach from NZ is disappointing. I'm all for experimentation, and I thought having Taylor at 3 was just that. Two new openers, a new number 4, Vettori in the middle order... not to mention our bowling. (Seriously, why isn't Patel playing over Mason, Gillespie, or Adams?)
