They're only going to get around 250 at this stage, and it won't be enough on this pitch.

What the heck is Cairns doing, he's bowling slower balls on leg stump with fine leg up!?

wow, amazing run out from Astle..it's good that they subbed him on for the last 5 overs so that he gets into the game.

Were my eyes deceiving me, or was Mills getting a lot of reverse swing today? The ball he got Maharoof with tailed a long way in, and even the one that got Dilshan looked to have swung into him.

I thought that Cairns was actually a lot better today. He bowled well at the death apart from that last over.

The encouraging thing for me was that he was finding the right length for a change.

I think that him and Styris should be sharing 10 overs.

Black Caps with their long batting line up and add to that Astle as Super Sub should win this with at least 6-7 overs to spare on this track.

Too many wickets at times when they needed to accelerate the run rate cost Sri Lankans another 30-40 runs and the Match .

For the next match Arnold should come in a little earlier, may be between 35th to 40th over.
Today it probably should've been ahead of Dilshan.

I don't think Malinga is up for OD cricket. he's too wayward. I think allrounders like Maharoof, Lokuhettige are the ideal candidates for the SS role.
You are probably right, but the trouble is the stupid idiot selectors who should've picked Nuwan Zoysa and IMHO Kaushalya Weeraratne , failed to pick those 2 for this series.

For NZ conditions a 4th seamer may be a necessity, particularly when out of the 3 already selected 1 or 2 will get carted around some where in their spell and the 4th seamer may be needed fill up the overs and try and restrict the run slog.

Out of the squad in NZ at the moment apart from Mlinga the other bowler left is Ruchira Perera , and I am not sure there is any point in picking that guy over Malinga unless he has some useful batting capability over Malinga.

Malinga could be useful as a Super Sub if he can bowl even 5-6 overs at the start of the innings without giving too many runs away.

Take today's Team, IMO it is slightly unbalanced considering they selected Mubarak as Super Sub, because now at half way point he has already become useless (Atleast they could substitute Avishka - and use his better fielding ability ).

BTW , I hope they can find an early flight to send Avishka back from his NZ holiday !! :D

Well, the bowlers are going to have to pick their team up because if NZ win today..the series is all over. And I wouldn't mind betting that if NZ continue to win the toss, they'll have a go at batting first..providing of course they win the series today.

Just seeing highlights of Tharanga, he looks to be a bright spot for Sri Lanka.

With their current bowling resources and the number of batsmen out of form or struggling to get runs, SL are unlikely to win a single Match in NZ.

The failure to pick some of the available bowling options such as Nuwan Zoysa and Kaushalya Weeraratne, along with the selectors failing to pick some other batsmen who have deserved a fair go at International level such as Michael Van Dort and Ian Daniel says a lot about the selectors .

Their lack of collective insight and wisdom is absolutely shocking.

Avishka is their favourite for reasons not cricket , and the sooner someone exposes this the better it will be for SL cricket . :D

Still not the finished Article IMO and although he ended up with runs today, he was lucky in that early on if one of his dabs outside the offstump had made contact he wouldn't have got many .

BTW Michael Slater deserves credit for putting the commentator's curse on Mahela and thus getting NZ a wicket .

** I must be the typical frustrated Sri Lankan cricket fan :D **

2 wickets down now. The only way I think SRL can win is to bowl us out so I hope that Fulton can do something or Marshall

Have to call it even now for Astle.

Baxter declined absolute plumb LBW off Murali in the23rd over.

Glad your not the umpire !! Replays showed that it clearly hit him outside the off stump playing a shot

Most definitely so. He showed a lot of promise in the 6 ODIs and in the test(s) he played against India. I think he'll be a very good talent for SL in the near future.

I'm very happy to see him score runs. :)

Sri Lanka may need to take a lot of steps to get back to a consistent performance mode but one thing that suggests itself so clearly as to be the biggest wonder for me that it isnt done is "GET RID OF FERNANDO" !!

Here is the dumbest fast bowler in the world today. Matt Dillon is a great thinker by comparison.

This guy seems to have been told by some idiot, whose advise he obviously values, that the batsmen in the world are scared stiff of seeing his lumbering grunting frame advancing at the wicket.

He seems to think he second name is Larwood or Thommo or Tyson the way he comes in and delivers short pitched delivery after short pitched deliver at his pitiable 130 kms per hour. Batsmen continue to slaughter these long hops that sit up and scream "please. oh please hit me somewhere hard".

And whats wrong with Atapattu or Moody ? This is suicide.

Vaas bowls has seven overs for 15 and this guy has 6 for 48. How are the others supposed to make up for his profligacy.

RIDICULOUS :@

LOL SJS I remember you criticism of Fernando during the Ind/SL ODI series. Fernando is still just as poor as he was then.

Reasonably comfortable victory to NZ in the end despite Astle's hairy moments with the no-balls. I was worried for a moment about Duckworth & Lewis towards the end especially as they show no regard for NZ's strong lower order

Well done Nathen Astle. Still doesn't look in great touch but did well as the anchor throughout the middle stages of our run chase.

Huge 6 from Cairns
