I think it will be McMillan, and I think he will be captain. McMillan's the only one with FC captaincy experience and test playing experience available, our first 3 choices for captain would be Fleming, Vettori, Oram, but none will be available. Think McMillan would be the next choice, since Astle's never captained before.
if that happens I will be awol ..................not only so far as the match but also from discussing it here...........

Sounds like it's a moot point now, with the word from the NZ camp being that there's no breakage and Fleming should be fine to play.
thank you lord...........

and once again it seems that NZL got the 2nd innings batting yips & were saved by Felm coming in to hold his bat in support of Vincent..............yet another example of the benefits available from a 6-4 split...............

Vincent's last 2 2nd innings digs have provided the batting highlights for those NZL innings, and he must be a long way towards ensuring his squad selection for ZIM / RSA.............

and keeping bloody Macca out of the squad for some time - unless they suddenly give him the kiss of death & get him to Open again!!!!!

and I'd rather see O'Brien at The Basin than Mills - don't give a rat's re his economy, he didn't take wickets not did he trouble the scorers..............

with 6 batsmen we don't need to be hedging our bets with bowlers who can supposedly bat - give me a specialist who looks to threaten & take wickets..............

and IMO O'Brien should have had another shot b4 Mills, and likewise b4 Adams or anyone else is brought in...............

and for my money C Martin needs to show us he can bowl around the wicket & get the ball to straighten when over the wicket, or else for mind he falls into the same category as Butler - being a 1 trick poney, and can kiss his squad berth for ZIM / RSA goodbye.............

what's the odds on a desperation call up for B Martin??????

how had he been bowling of late - given that his season is over??????

If i had videos of the two India-Pak series' and the two India-Aus series i could make a very, very strong case that Bucknor is biased against India. The evidence would be overwhelming

Agreed .... I am Canadian and consider myself a lover of the game of cricket. I enjoy watching all cricket teams play regardless of country ..... and I sadly have to conclude that certain umpirs have "genaral bias" against sub continant teams. Some of the things other teams get away with are unbelievable. I think I predicted that Bucknor/Hair combo will "stick it to Sri Lanka". However I am relieved that they were at least "Moderate" in their biased decisions.

Kudos to the SL team for performing admirably after the long layoff. Their country needs a strong cricket team ... especially the Tsunami victims who will have a reason to smile enjoying the feats of their idols.

You sure about that the 8 and 9 for the top three sides:
- Warne and Gillespie (Australia)
- Giles and Hoggard (England)
- Pathan and Kumble (India)

I would say that Vaas and Chandana at 8 and 9 would be better then all those three IMHO.
Much worse than the Aussies, just about level with England (owing to the recent improvement from the English pair), ahead of India.

Nice caveat.

Put in because I was referring to those who've been on here a long time (the likes of Neil, RIch, me, Richard, Rik, TEC) but I knew if I didn't people would mention the odd one who come on make a few whinging posts and leave.

Of course other CW posters wouldn't have you think the same it seems.
I'm assuming you're referring to me, as you seem to have an issue with most things I post.

I can assure you it is far from that - I have often made distinctions, because I do appreciate that there are the odd one or 2 who don't belong to the Terrace Element.

Comparing the averages of English pair and the Indian pair over the last 10 test matches:

Giles 31.25
Hoggard 12.00

Pathan 24.09
Kumble 23.00

Seems pretty even.

I still think styris has to play vs SA. His record is very good but then again I've been very impressed with vincent in the middle order so i don't want to drop him.

And don't move hamish from 3, Anzac you had him at 4 but why would you wanna change him, we finally have a good no 3.
Maybe flem should go back to open and drop cumming for this series vs SA

Fleming
J. Marshall
H.Marshall
S.Styris
N.Astle
L.Vincent
J.Oram
B.Mccullum
D.Vettori
J.Franklin
S.Bond

Wonderful team!

The 4 backups for me would be
I.Butler, Tuffey also in contention if he can back to some form as he is a very good bowler but not on what he has shown recently.
P Fulton,
Bruce martin??? But if vettori is injured, is there really any point in picking another spinner?

currently neither Butler, Tuffey nor Mills would make my squad - Butler because he has not shown anything different this season other than his standard back of a length, Tuffey because his action is stuffed as much as he is injured, Mills because he is too one dimensional regarding his 'swing'...........and C Martin is also doubtful.............

I'm also miffed that both Sherlock & Davis have been out for most of the season as I'd want to have one of them in the squad, much like Tait will be for The Ashes..............but I'm not aware of any other young bowling alternatives who have put their hand up as of yet........

so far as other seam options go I'd look at the likes of Adams, Walmsley & Gillespie as other options who have had reasonable domestic records, but I'm looking for attacking seamers with reasonable pace bowling genuine wicket taking deliveries, as opposed to containment bowlers to 'strangle' wickets out..........
You've got to be kidding with that post.

Walmsley is retiring, and Gillespie is a journeyman, much like Canning in the 4-day game.

The difference between Sherlock/Davis and Tait, is that the latter has actually taken over 60 wickets at an average of around 20! Adams deserves a go ahead of those two definitely. Who cares about blooding young bowlers, just select the best there is.

I would never consider Canning as a bowler for the Test team. His 120km/h just won't do it at Test level.

The day Tama Canning plays test cricket is the day i stop supporting NZ cricket.

IMO they need to get Tuffy back in to the mix, get rid of Mills and take Butler on the tour to Africa

NZ is pretty settled in the batting department IMO.. they even posted some decent scores against AUS but we really, desperately need to sort out the bowling department.

We need bowlers who can execute plans and actually look like they are trying to get the batsman out rather than just trying not to get hit for runs.

Franklin is a player I like the look of but he has stopped swinging the ball now that he is bowling quicker. He needs to sort that out and then he is a very decent long term option for the Black Caps.

Shane Bond will make a huge difference to this side when he returns.

In Africa I would have Bond, Tuffey, Franklin and Butler as my four main pace bowlers on the tour with Vettori backing them up.

Chris Martin's NZ career is over IMO unless he pulls something out of the bag in the second test.

He isn't that Bad!
We have tried worse bowlers, like mason vs Southafrica.

But canning is not in contention for a test spot imo.
