I have to admitt i like people playing shots, even in Test and sometimes when i watch Thilan and Atapattu bat i get bored.psxpro said:Chaminda the thing is, Overall we usually make up the rate becasue our other players play aggressively.
I do agree that cumming doesn't play enough shots and james Marshall also is struggling a bit, Hamish is in a different class, he looks far more confident.
If we had our openers playing normal cricket where they attacked more we would probably normally score close to 4 an over overall. Thats why Mccullum is an option to open in the future imo, he would play more strokes.
can Sri Lanka get them out under 200 , i don't think so but their giving themselves a chance_Ed_ said:H.Marshall was lucky to be given not out for the one he edged there. I like to see batsmen walk when they edge it, especially after all my complaints about Langer recently. But he got out not long afterwards so never mind.
He does usually open domesticallychaminda_00 said:On question to the Kiwis, why doesn't James open the batting in domestic cricket, he looks like a good opener and well suited to the role.
Sorry i read somewhere else on this forum that he was pushed to open and he was a middle order batsmenBlaze said:He does usually open domestically
I think when Oram comes back their could be the option to push Vincent up to open the batting. He looks a better middle order batsmen, but so does Fulton, and also he done it before. For me the best options for opening combernations is one attacking batter on defence style batsmen, Vincent and James Marshall will provide. One other thing to consider is that James, has shown sighs of aggression, but seems to nervous at the moment, maybe when he gets so more confidence he will be more of an attcaking batsmen. I doubt the Kiwi selectors would have picked him in the ODI side if he plays this defensive all the time, mind you the Lankan selectors have picked Thilan in ODI sides in the past. Will Scarlet said:I agree that Cumming doesn't play enough shots. I believe NZ needs at least one attacking opener, and should therefore replace Cumming in the next test with either How or Fulton. Yes I would prefer Fulton in the middle order. It's also the last chance to test someone before the next tour.
NZ needs to go away from this old-school strategy of surviving the opening spells and scoring at less than two an over. It's such a negative, defensive mindframe that further restricts the batsmens' ability to score runs. And afterall, you have to score runs to win matches.
AUS for years have shown that if you attack the bowling from the start the bowling can go to pieces, making it easier for the middle order should a wicket fall. Sure, you also need the talent to pull it off.
Additionally, with the limited strength of the bowling line-up, especially with Vettori out for the second test, NZ batsmen need to score their runs at a better rate to give the bowlers a chance to take 20 wickets.
I don't think so, after what Lee did to him, most quick bowlers will be lining up to bowl to him. He has massive technical problems that he need to be sort out. He has got more chance of making the side as a keeper.Kumar_42 said:Once Papps comes back, do you think he'll become NZs regular opener? If so who (out of Cumming and J.Marshall) would he dislodge?
Yeah you might be right. Still, from what I've seen of him as a test opener, he seems to be a courageous/determined batsmen with a good temperament. Sometimes such a temperament and determination compensate for technical deficiencies.chaminda_00 said:I don't think so, after what Lee did to him, most quick bowlers will be lining up to bowl to him.
