*Official* Sri Lanka in New Zealand, 2024–25 (ODIs / T20Is)

Went to the game last night (free tickets, trying to indoctrinate kids), interesting to watch the bowlers and how much zip they appear to have. Foulkes really doesn't have that sharp snap to his bowling like certainly Henry does, and Duffy does when he's on. Think Foulkes needs to add that if he's going to be effective in any form.

Duffy is probably going to end up one of the notable enigmas of NZC, even if it's not acknowledged in a wider audience than here. Probably won't play Test cricket, has played very little ODI cricket and may forge the rest of his career putting up decent numbers in who cares T20Is. Should have done a lot more with his ability but didn't - an FC average of 33 is criminal, really.

And as my final point, at the ground, do they always play music between balls? I'm trying to do my best analytic stuff between deliveries and my kids can't hear me. It's like a over stimulated kid's wet dream for 3 hrs between the music, wackedy do and the ground announcer telling local fans to make some noise for the 30th time

Yeah, when Duffy first showed up as a 17 year old bowling 137kmh outswingers released from nearly 10 feet high I thought "Damn this kid is going to play 100+ tests".

I remember Kippax suggesting way back in the day that the unexpected and sudden departure of Vaughan Johnson from Otago really harmed Duffy's development.

I commented about the between-balls barrage of 'inst inst' music when I was at the first T20. Sometimes the music was commencing while the ball was still getting back to the keeper. Just completely destroys the immersion of the spectator in each over. NZC once again showing little to no regard for cricket people who want to be at a cricket event to enjoy cricket.

Duffy perhaps NZ's best seamer not to play a test (ahead of Andrew Penn and Jeff Wilson)?

Duffy was in squad for Mount Maunganui day/night test against England in Feb 2023, IMHO a mistake to not have him in playing XI as Duffy would have offered more control, less chance of England scoring at 5.5 and 5.0 RPO against assortment of unthreatening short stuff from Ticker Kuggs and an aging Wagner.

Yeah I don't want to be too cynical as I'm in happy man holiday mode but I found the music incredibly tiring. And your last point isn't a million miles off. The moment in between balls is an opportunity to dissect what just happened - if someone just pumped a six, or there was an over throw, or something worth discussing, you really can't. We got there at 630 and in the next 45 minutes it was wall to wall either music or some NZC mouth asking punters who was going to win. Aptly summarized by the bloke who, when asked who was going to lead New Zealand's charge that evening, said Kane Williamson was on for a ton.

I won't go back to a T20, it was T-dious.

I get it - it brings punters through the gates and kids nowadays have this insatiable want to listen to music at all times. It's not for me, which is disappointing for a cricket tragic.

Yeah he absolutely has to be up there. Andre played one, which puts him firmly in the conversation too.

You're right, he should have played the Mount game. Has the ability to swing it more than any of those three, who proved pretty ineffective in the one evening we did bowl, from memory.

I reckon in any other era Seth Rance could have made a 30 or 40 test career, as a late starter. A-la Ian O'Brien. Man that guy was a good bowler. But same age as Southee and Boult, late starter, and paying a bald man's tax

Also. A while ago I came across on YouTube a domestic game, think it was domestic T20 from mid or late 00s. With Leighton Burtt looking in peak years. I can see the 'almost' hype about him.

Glenn Turner was scathing about the introduction of music *in-between* overs in Lifting the Covers. That was in the mid-late 90's. Said it was putting off people of his generation. Definitely share his sentiments about constant music in between deliveries.

Went to 2015 world cup match at caketin, nz v Eng.

Dint know if there was less music, or maybe even no music, as it was an ICC event rather than an NZC concert. But it was so good. Tim Southee was bowling that killer spell and I was sitting at the thirdman or fineleg boundary. And the cheer/applause he would get from the crowd near his fielding position as he returned each over was great, really nostalgic.

I wonder if it was no music, or if I am misremembering? Maybe it was the novelty of a full(ish) stadium for the first time in eons, or a mix of international crowd in attendance who weren't zombified like the locals - by then 20 years of attending nz sporting events since the mid 90s when 'DJing' turned our crowds into mute singalong sheep attending compulsory 'fun'.
