I totally get what you're saying. For me, I wouldn't pick him in a format he's not suited to. As I said, he averages 15. Let the guy play the longer formats and play the game he's more suited to, rather than do any damage to what he's trying to be as a batsman.. Which also begs the question why we're picking a guy who averages 15 with the bat to come in at 7, who isn't a noted hitter of any degree, and he doesn't bowl???This is true, but exposure and experience is good for him. Unless he fails, then he's discarded until he's 35.
It's bizarre. He didn't bowl in either of those ODIs. He's not a 7 - he doesn't have the power game. So WTF are we doing? If it's 'get him in the environment' then I really don't see the need. OK, he batted decently at Eden Park as a salvage job from 7, and that's about the only situation you'd want him doing. It's weird that we play Ravindra so far down the order, like we expect him to be an all-rounder, but then we don't even bowl him. He's a specialist number 7 in the batting line up listed for this game, and he batted there in the 2 ODIs as well.
Ever since Vettori we've had a tidy finger spinner/lower order bat fetish which we can't seem to shake. We literally have no conception of a finger spinner who's just in the team to bowl, hence why Ajaz doesn't exist anymore.I totally get what you're saying. It's because we're selected and managed by people who used to play semi-pro cricket rather than by people who are good at selecting and managing things. It's weird that we play Ravindra so far down the order, like we expect him to be an all-rounder, but then we don't even bowl him. I assume he would have bowled 1 or 2 overs if SL hadn’t had 2 lhb all mid-innings. Is why Macewell / McConchie can be useful in NZ white ball team, turn it the other way to the # 1 #2 spinners.…Which also begs the question why we're picking a guy who averages 15 with the bat to come in at 7, who isn't a noted hitter of any degree, and he doesn't bowl???
This is a good point. Jayden Lennox, with his 30 T20 wickets at 16s and 7.3 economy rate would agree wholeheartedly.Ever since Vettori we've had a tidy finger spinner/lower order bat fetish which we can't seem to shake. Yeah, you might be right...maybe he would've got some of Neesham's overs, who knows. I know Chapman is a lesser bowler but he's in the same realm if you want LH spin without playing a guy at 7 who has a terrible record and isn't a power hitter. Or you know, that guy Clarkson who apparently goes OK at times (yes I realise the Ford Trophy final was after the squad was named). Or Mitchell, who is a canny bowler and could bowl short cutters and make them hit squareI assume he would have bowled 1 or 2 overs if SL hadn’t had 2 lhb all mid-innings. I may have been a bit off with this. What an uninspiring batting line up named by NZ ... not that I think we'll be chasing much!
