To be fair I think we're unlikely to see another day of such poor bowling and fielding from SL in this series. Plenty of slow full tosses, wide rubbish and some of the fielding would have disgraced an Indian team from the 1990s.
You should have seen the Indian team of 2014 fielding today. They were terribad in the first session.

But but.. we had to get the ball back from the boundary bosssss...
I wasn't watching much of it tbh but there's a thing we're taught in school cricket: running to your fielding position between overs. It's been unacceptable and the captain must take responsibility.

I don't see why they bother with Umpire's call for the pitching and striking elements of LBW reviews. We know that ball tracking technology is extremely accurate in these areas. If tennis has no need for an umpire's call when determining where a ball lands then I don't see why cricket should either.
For where it pitches, yes totally agree.

However, the point of impact with the pad is far harder to pinpoint accurately, especially when the ball is pitched up and the batsman's pad is shuffling all over the crease.

Here is my wrap up post for the day Woodster style for those that remember him

Brendon just decided to be belligerent. I am not sure when he made the decision or whether he plans to bat the rest of his career this way but he just decided today is my day and he decided early. I do remember him being ruffled by the spinner early and then deciding that defending is for the birds and hitting the next ball for six.

Sri Lanka's fielding was not up to standard. They take that Kane catch and maybe the day finishes very differently for them.

I don't know what became of Kane after lunch. I remember him playing one expansive drive and getting comprehensively beaten and then just shelving all attacking shots. He needs to re-find his mojo for the 2nd dig.

I am not sold on Neesham despite the quality of this inning. I would like to see him perform against the likes of Australia before being sold on him. Bahnz made a good post about him that occassionally you can just sniff some lower orderishness about his batting. Also although his innings came off - I don't think he needed to go for so many sixes while batting with Brendon - his job should have been a supportive one.

On the bowling I think the spinner and many sub continental spinners seem to have a completely different way of spinning the ball. It is very wristy. Kiwis tend to spin it with their fingers. This guy did it with his whole hand. By the way the kid has a doosra and he doesn't chuck.

I thought it was interesting that the dibbly dobbler looked like one of the better bowlers on the day. But it was good his captain took him off before the batsman figured him out.
Lakmal got it to swing in his second spell but not in his first spell. He looks like an intelligent bowler but needs to find more movement either in the air or off the seam to be effective.

At this stage I would be telling the tail to come out swinging tomorrow. Just advance the game as quickly as possible.

What the hell happened here?? God, just catching up with the highlights. ****z... McCullum and Neesham finally deciding that Lakmal and Co. are being given too much respect just because it's test cricket? Nice idea...

Matthews looks head and shoulders above every player in SL bar Sanga.

Not sure why Dickwella was picked over Chandimal.. sure both are untested but I would think if SL are building for the future they can't afford to ditch a batsman averaging ~45 at 25 years old? I feel like they just wanted to keep the right-left hand combination going.. ffs Dickwella averages 31 in FC cricket compared to Chandimal's 53..

**** logic.

Maybe Sanga vouched for the guy from his alma mater..

Really liked watching Kaushal bowl even if he got spanked. Can see him being a handful in years to come.

Kinda like how Rutherford started. He seems to have improved but still some obvious deficiencies but I reckon it's worth persevering with him, given his & Latham's age they could become a long term Langer-Hayden style partnership duo that work best together rather than having one incumbent and a carousel of domestic wannabes or tried and faileds.

Just wanna see us bowl tbh. 429 is a decent total to declare on, right? :ph34r:I imagine 500 will be the target with us trying to bowl at them before lunch.

Cool. I don't want to see us struggle with the tail.

Need for Wagner to be in good form and not a pressure-release valve. Likewise Neesham.

Boult to get Sanga cheaply.

What's SL's tail been like, batting-wise?
Prasad is quiet talented and can play some pretty damn good shots, but tends to just fall over and get out quickly, particularly outside the SC, Eranga can hold up an end for a while with a decent partner at the other end but he won't make many runs, Lakmal is pretty awful, although he's improved a bit over the last year or so, I think Kaushal isn't too bad, don't know much about him though, unless Matthews is batting with them you'd imagine we won't get much from the tail

Nah tail batting in NZ is much easier than England because the kookaburra becomes a dud, and NZ doesn't have a Johnson to really rip through them when the ball isn't swinging.

Yes, I also think we should stick with Rutherford.

DICKwella seems to think this pitch is flat, FMD. No buddy, your bowling attack is/was just terrible. I didn't think Sri Lanka could be any worse than the West Indies last year but after that performance they might be a chance.

Just a shame New Zealand didn't pick Doug Bracewell. Would've been handy on this pitch, Wagner won't be much of a threat bowling his dross.

I actually think the pitch is pretty flat. It's not disgracefully so, but it's definitely not as helpful as the colouring suggests as I'm not convinced it was a bowl first wicket. "Seamy road" as has been popularised here is probably the best description. :p

You can't deny that Sri Lanka were bloody terrible though.
