Sigh, more depressing fragility on display from our top order. If Kane and McCullum go early then the whole edifice crumbles.

Also shows why strategic reviews are ****ing stupid.

I would have selected the likes of Munro (average 28 SR 99) or Watling (if they needed a back-up keeper which I don't think they needed to as part of the 15) ahead of Latham. Even the likes of Franklin or Neesham would be better middle order players, assuming Latham & Eliiott are competing for the no 5 spot.
Watling unlucky not be in the frame, but his SR isn't great either. Munro just not an international player IMO, Neesham has an even worse LO batting record and Franklin even at his supposed batting peak was too unreliable. At worst, Latham is about as good as those options.

Latham is also covering opener and number 3, which none of those guys can cover.

The big question will be if the selectors will bring him in for Guptill.

Clearly Taylor was in a "I want to break free" mode today & actually played some lovely strokes. Just a shame he went a little overboard & was overly reckless in the end.
This is the part that peeves me off about Taylor. He DOES NOT have to play that ugly hoick to cow corner. If he sticks with his drives, pulls and cuts he'll be fine. He'll get his 50 off 65 odd, anchor the innings and then he can cut loose.

I suspect that McCullum will be rested at some point and New Zealand will play Latham and Guptill together. Will be interesting to see what happens then if Latham makes runs and Guptill fails again.

Test cricket, I agree...but Munro smacks as an absolute ODI specialist for mine. And the last time I looked 28 @ 98 is somewhat better than 24 @ 71

Nah, at his peak Franklin scored 4 consecutive 50s (including a 100) IIRC (or something like that vs India a few years back), but granted Franko and Neesham's records aren't great, but I could see at least see them scoring more quickly than Latham, but agree they're probably a much and a muchness. But def Munro & Watling would be better than Latham currently is in the middle.

Yeah, this. Looked like Lanka wanted to play him back into form by bowling Thirimanne, Was a golden opportunity to play the KW role.

Great batting by Ronchi. Regardless of the match situation, a pie is a pie and it's great to see him putting them away.
