Sri Lankans suffer further humiliation as they lose to Sir Paul Getty's XI as well by 16 runs !!:@

Sir Paul Getty’s XI v Sri Lankans, Wormsley

Northeast underlines his class

Cricinfo staff

May 3, 2006

Sir Paul Getty's XI 195 for 6 (Northeast 62*, Dennington 34; Muralitharan 2-16) beat Sri Lankans 179 (Jayawardena 33, Kulasekera 30*, Muralitharan 30, Magoffin 4-14, Gidman 3-30)

The Sri Lankans lost their lowest-profile warm-up game, against Sir Paul Getty's XI, by 16 runs. Amid such beautiful surroundings - even on a cold and grey May day - the cricket, for the last time on the tour, was almost of secondary importance.

The headlines belonged to the youngest player in the match, 16-year-old Sam Northeast, a Harrow schoolboy who top scored for Getty's XI with an unbeaten 62. Northeast has been getting a fair amount of attention - he scored 96 on his debut for Kent 2nd XI against Durham last summer - and on the evidence of this innings, it is not hard to see why. It was fitting that he played here as he was in the Harrow side that was on tour in Galle when the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in December 2004.

The Wormsley pitch is usually one to break the hearts of any bowler, but so early in the season it was the batsmen who found the going harder. Northeast batted throughout the Getty innings, facing 143 balls in all, and keeping his head as other more familiar names - Graeme Hick (8) and Tatenda Taibu (16) - came and went in an innings of 195 for 6 from 50 overs.

The Sri Lankans batting has failed to ignite so far, and once again they struggled, with Western Australia's Steve Magoffin putting the skids under them with 4 for 14 and then William Gidman cashing in with three late wickets.

I've heard of Sam Northeast. From what I've heard, he's an absolute god in the making. What a fantastic effort that is. :)

Obviously a future England batsman in the making.

I am also impressed by Murali's score of 30. Murali has in his Test career so far failed to show any inclination to improve his batting prowess or even the desire to occupy the crease long enough to support the batsman at the other end, but may be he is changing . I hope so any way.

A 16 year old batsman and 2 average county bowlers are enough to rattle the Lankans.
A meaningless game that was probably treated as a bit of fun (in line with all other games at that ground)

A while ago, a mate of mine reckoned that Anderson's action would see him in the kanckers yard before too long. Is that what we've seen this week, or is it just one of those things?

Has he ever impressed at County level, some players are just better at International Level then county level. Regardless i think the selectors will be looking at his fitness more then his form, his abilty is not under question.
As if by magic, guess what today's Cricinfo list is on!

Spooky.

And for the record Trescothick:

Tests - 5502 @ 45.47 (69 so far)
All FC - 11738 @ 35.78 (199 so far)
Non Tests FC - 6236 @ 30.13 (130!)

That clearly debunks certain people's theories that you have to succeed at FC level in order to do so in Tests.

Err, I think you'll find that Trescothick is an anomaly who has simply been very, very lucky. He's certainly not a fine player like Mark Butcher who, although he averages more than 10 runs less per test innings & constantly spunks his wicket away when well set, is clearly a better player. As I've proved.

in a way i think the early season injuries to the England players could be a blessing in disguise ahead of the long season ahead since they would be getting less playing time going into the ashes which is definately the most important series for England.

Players who never got to play test cricket despite trucks loads of runs or wickets at domestic level?

Treso is building an innings today at least. Avoiding another CC stinker by the looks of it
Shame no-one could stay with him. 95* with 7 down, last I checked. Looks like an interesting track at Northants though.

Whilst we're busy over-hyping him... "When he left Wellesley House in Broadstairs, his prep school, he'd racked up 19 centuries during his last term and earned a sport scholarship to Harrow. He played for the first XI at Lord's when he was just 14"

As well as differences between FC and Test average.

Are you sure that was in today's piece? Maybe I missed it. Getting old, you know.

EDIT
Checked it properly and there it was all along. Not quite as many significantly overachieving in tests as we might have expected, esp when you take out the likes of Hussey who's only played a handful, mostly against piechuckers. Interesting stats though.

Well, one of the greatest batsmen ever was a big overachiever it seems:

Ken Barrington

Test: 131 innings, 15 not outs, 6806 runs @ 58.67, 20 hundreds, 35 fifties.
Non-Test FC: 700 innings, 121 not outs, 24908 runs @ 43.01, 56 hundreds, 130 fifties

A very respectable county cricketer, but an absolutely superb Test batsman. Not only scoring 15 runs more per dismissal, but geting hundreds at twice the rate too (6.5 innings per hundred in Tests vs 12.5 in FC). He also retired from Tests and FC cricket at the same time and only played 2 seasons of county cricket before making his debut, so poor scores when very young or very old don't skew the figures. I can only imagine that playing against the best and representing his country motivated him and pushed him harder just as it seems to for Trescothick I suppose

Now watch him get a football contract and end up playing twelve seasons for Barnet.

Just hope he doesn't chose other sports over cricket.

I can't believe they're thinking about playing Mahmood.

apparently he's a rugby county players aswell.

Incidentally he opened the batting with Billy Godleman, another who's said to special, who made 30 odd
