A couple of games over three weeks as far as First Class cricket goes. He had a hit in Second XI stuff before that. I'm really surprised he's not at least in the squad; it wouldn't have surprised me if he ended up twelfth man because of their new balance requirements, but as much as I think rate Woakes higher and Stokes lower than most on this forum, I didn't in a million years expect Woakes to get the nod here.
Yeah I only thought he'd potentially get a go if they decided to pick him and Stokes and he'd had a really good early season. Neither happened.

Glad to see one of my best mates Sam Robson selected for England. Very well deserved for 1 of the great blokes.

You know he's secretly happy about less competition in the Aussie batting order.

From the match reports that I have read, Plunkett has impressed this season with pace and accuracy so problem with his selection

Hard to justify Root's selection as there haven't been any signs of improvement in his technique

Prior is a Hail Mary on both form and fitness and I can only assume that he is there to support Cook

Watched a bit of Plunkett on Sky when the CC was on, and he didn't look much quicker than he has the last few years, and his accuracy early in his spell was awful, too many balls pushed down the leg-side. Weird selection. Just hope, if he does play, he's not nervous, could be a massive disaster, and he could very easily go at 6 an over + if he sprays it around. If you're going to pick a quick, but relatively inaccurate bowler, surely Finn would have been the guy to go to?

Pleased for Robson, and Moeen, much deserved selections, just hope they get a chance to perform, and don't get pushed aside should they not make a big score in the series.

I'd like the XI for the first Test to be:

Cook
Robson
Root
Ballance
Bell
Moeen
Prior +
Woakes
Broad
Plunkett
Anderson

It should be a shoot-out between Plunkett and Jordan, as they're very similar cricketers, but it'll be a shoot-out between Woakes and Plunkett, and I really hope they don't go with both Jordan and Plunkett. Could be a potential disaster if neither can settle on a decent line and length. Neither are the most accurate of bowlers.

Overall, decent side, some interesting selections, but can see the logic behind the selections, I'm just glad we didn't pick Morgan, or Bairstow.

Liam ****ing Plunkett. I heard Saj Mahmood was available too. And Jade Dernbach. Now that would have been some kind of attack.

Can you please elaborate on the logic? I think Morgan would have been good selection. He is a good improvisor.

Well all the new guys they've picked, other than probably Jordan have been stand-outs in the Championship this year, and even he's been pretty good, and we all knew Prior was coming back in if fit. As for Morgan, he is not a Test cricketer. Hasn't performed for Middlesex, and International sides are beginning to find him out. He's weak outside the off-stump, and looked terrible last time he was in the Test side. He's rightly been left out, hopefully it'll stay that way.

You have a point.

I wonder how it would be if players start improvising in Test Cricket too. The new shots still should get some runs there...

Hope they don't plan using Moeen or Root too often, Sangakkara and co will feast. Still think Foster + Taylor > Prior + Root and disappointed not to see them in the squad, guess it's a good chance for Root and in particular Prior to make it or break it.

Cook
Robson
Root
Bell
Ballance
Moeen
Prior
Broad
Jordan
Plunkett
Anderson

Mixed emotions about the squad picked. Robson and Moeen are great additions, and I hope that both of them grab their opportunity. Not really a fan of Carberry or Root, the latter has some time and will probably eventually break through, but Carberry has missed his chance and its time to move on. I was hoping that the new era would usher in some more radical changes, particularly with respect to rewarding consistency at the domestic level (as radical as that sounds) and it is disappointing that players like James Taylor and Jack Brooks continue to be left out.

As far as the pace attack is concerned, I fail to understand how Chris Jordan or Plunkett provide any usefulness to this attack. The selection of these two really is clearly disillusioned and marks the return of bringing in quick bowlers for the sake of having someone who can bowl at 90mph despite the fact that neither has any tangible skill outside of being capable of bowling at a brisk pace. The idea that both could play in the same test is more than just a little scary.

Totally agree with that last sentence, could end up having two bowlers spraying it around, and if Broad has one of his mediocre days, which occur fairly often, we'll end up getting slapped around. For me, with this squad, Anderson, Broad and Woakes have to play, and then you pick one of the two quicks. Crazy to play both of them.

Yes they are going really well..shame dimuth didn't get any but I am sure he will come good..I will be very interested to see how Pradeep bowls...our only genuinely quick bowler..
