Mendis is in the squad? Haven't followed SL too kuch recently... What happened to Randiv? He looked better than Mendis easily the few times I saw him

Randiv was in the squad to tour Australia after having a pretty solid 2012, often bowling tightly in tandem with Herath and taking a few wickets, he averaged 32 for the year. He was then inexplicably not played at Sydney on a turning deck (where Dilshan bowled a lot of overs), then dropped from the squad to play the Bangladesh tests in March 2013, and since then he hasn't had anything to do with the national side, he didn't even play in the four day triangular thing Sri Lanka had where three teams of the best domestic and national players formed three teams and played each other once. Just yesterday he took 7/76 in a first class game though, after taking 5/30 in the first dig of another match, so he's still performing and should be right up there IMO. Certainly more than Mendis who's proved time and time again he's not a test quality bowler when batsmen are able to pick him and the pitch isn't an absolute bunsen.

rubel being retained and robiul dropped is ridiculous. SL has some good spinners going around not only is randiv floating around out of the national team but they've got prasanna, kaushal and boralessa who are all terrific performers.

Turns out Rubel got dropped anyway, but I'm not particularly sold on the wisdom of only picking 1 pace bowler when they have so many spin options who aren't specialists anyway, but whatever.

it's ludicrous.

Shakib is at the very least their second best spinner, quite possibly their best.

Bangladesh are a good case for my theory of 'being an ordinary team play for the draw', except they are at home this time. They could have included an extra batsman for Razzak for it to work even more but numbers 8 to 11 can all bat a bit in this lineup. Bad toss to lose, you'd have to back yourself against Sri Lanka's attack.

I think it was actually the right move once Robiul was cut from the squad. Rubel shouldn't be playing Test cricket at home regardless of what else happens. Razzak is also a rubbish Test bowler but he's slightly more likely to do something here than Rubel IMO. Obviously Robiul should be playing instead, but even though it's true Shakib, Gazi and Mahmudullah should be bowling a lot more than Razzak, I'd still rather Razzak bowl the remaining overs to Rubel.

It's still a crap selection though. Robiul straight up should've played and if they really did want to play four spinners then Taijul Islam and Enamul Haque were far better options.

Pretty funny in general though that they've gone from three quicks to one. Recalls for Kayes and Razzak to the Test side in the same game do not speak well for Bangladesh cricket in general.

Definitely against this attack on this pitch.

Gazi having to open the bowling

Spin from the second over of a test match, ridiculous. I understand going spin heavy if thats where you are strongest but this is going overboard.

The bowlers certainly should've been...

Robiul
Al-Amin
Mahmadullah
Gazi
Barring the Mahmudullah selection (which I agree with btw), this would seem to be about the most blindingly obvious selection options they could go for. Maybe I could understand them bringing in, say Mashrafe Mortaza for someone. But there's absolutely no one else who's played test cricket for Bangladesh in the past 2 years that demands selection even close to as much as those three.

In the same game Ajantha Mendis and Nuwan ****ing Pradeep get recalled too. Jesus wept.
Mendis I'm also appalled at, but Pradeep? Did you see him in Dubai? He bowled beautifully, seamed the ball both ways at pace with decent control, and in any case, it was either him or that uncapped left-armer in the squad with the best prospects back home (Welegedara and Kulesakara IMO) just getting back from injury.

They're all awful. Dubai was the best I've seen him bowl, in all likelihood, but he's still a bit pooey. I've hopped on the Madushanka bandwagon for no reason.

Lakmal, Eranga and Pradeep might still be a bit ****e, but they are all streets ahead of where they were this time last year
