Broad has said the conditions were too much in favor of the bowlers in the mrng sessions when they bowled. Did it even get better to bat on later in the day?
Eh maybe a bit conditions wise, definitely a lot bowling quality wise. If Rabada had only conceded half of what he actually did England wouldn't have a lead at the end of play. England definitely needed to take a bigger advantage of that.

Joe Root’s average on the slide again. He’ll finish below 50 in the finest English tradition. Has questions to answer.

Hapless batting this. SA definitely batted in the worst of the conditions and have a number of inexperienced batters at this level. England have fewer excuses. Weather was relatively better in the afternoon. England should have got a decent lead not 40.

Our tail is pathetic. SL and Bangla are similar but some of the other tails in test cricket bat like their lives depend on it ffs.

Roughly what their captain did.
Both of the senior players, tbh. I know it's not wise to draw too many conclusions half way through the test, especially after what we saw against NZ and India, but the flip side of Stokes' inspirational captaincy has been some poor decisions in this test: the decision to retain Crawley, his own shot selection yesterday and, oddly, his decision not to bring himself on to bowl at all. SA's semi-recovery from 36 for 6 is looking significant now.

Beyond all that, how often have the first two innings of a test match been completed in fewer than 436 legitimate deliveries? It can't have happened too often and, until the weather intervened, I was hoping that the first three innings would all feature on the first day's play.
