*Official* South Africa in New Zealand

Until Butler starts learning to pitch the ball up & swing it at pace..he's always going to be picked off with ease bowling short of a length rubbish all the time.

any ideas what Butler's been bowling in the 'A' series???????????

lets hope that Franklin gets the call for The Basin & can provide yet another option...........

:)

I've just been listening to Sports Radio, and Jeremy Coney is keen for James Franklin to play in the 3rd test.

Congratulations are in order for NZ for winning their first home test against South Africa! Lets hope they can win the series!:D

Well the squad for the 3rd test has been named.

Tuffey drops out & in come Michael Mason & Kyle Mills.

Butler was not considered due to injury & it seems James Franklin did not do enough to warrant selection.

Wow, big win for New Zealand, I backed South Africa to win the ODI and test series and am being proved wrong with authority. NZ are becoming a force in international cricket, that's for sure.

I think Mason will play ahead of Mills. Well that's what I will do.

Franklin should be considered for England as an option to give the attack variety if they want an all seam line-up.

Bond will probably get his spot back but hasnt played any cricket in over a year...

Well apparently there will only be 14 spots available for the tests in England, so really it comes down to the winning 11 at Eden Park today plus presuming everyone is fit: Astle & Bond.

That leaves 1 spot & there are probably over 8 or 9 players seriously in contention for that spot.

Personally, I don't think 14 is enough...they're going all the way over to England & should really have all bases covered i.e. backup opener, spinner & a couple of pace bowlers.

14 spots is not enough. I thought the NZ selectors would have learned a lesson when Nevin and Vincent were making fools of themselves in the TVS cup with no back-up options.

The remaining 3 spots will go to Bond, Astle and another seam bowler. No point in selecting Wiseman as he's not good enough, so it comes down to a seam bowler. Probably either Mason/Butler or Franklin. I would select Franklin, increase the squad to 15, and select Sinclair.

What happens if Papps or Richardson score poorly in the opening 2 tests and tour matches? Who will open? Astle/McMillan should be interchangable at no. 5, but can't open. Astle could open the batting but the selectors wouldn't have the balls to make the call.

Fleming can open if need be.

So he may see himself as a back-up opener.

16 would be ideal.

14 is enough. You can always fly someone over. Thats only 24 hours.

a thoroughy deserved Test win with NZ outperforming RSA in all aspects over the last 4 days..........
Not really on Day 1 to be fair!

In fact that 1st Day makes the result all the more impressive.

I've said time & time again that we should play to our strengths & pick quick bowlers rather than 2 spinners.
Are there any of the top order who can bowl part-time spin?

And the acclimatising and the jet lag...

14 is a ridiculously low number - a couple of injuries and they'd be in big trouble!

Tim - what was your source for the squad number?

Looking at this tour schedule, I find it pretty much unsuitable for 14 men. Even with rotation, some players would have to play an excessive amount within a 5-week period. McCullum for example would never 'keep for 30 days of cricket before the ODIs even start, and as soon as you talk about reserve 'keepers being required they've always taken squads of 16 in the past. I know Papps will be there, but even still.

Besides, it makes sense to take fringe players from a development point of view. Otherwise England may as well just give us one warm-up game and let our main squad rest at home for a while longer.

May

3-5 British Universities Fenners
7-10 Worcestershire New Road
13-16 Kent Canterbury
20-24 1st Test Lord's
28-31 Leicestershire Grace Road

June

3-7 2nd Test Headingley
10-14 3rd Test Trent Bridge

then...

16 Derbyshire Derby
18 D/N Essex Chelmsford
20 Northamptonshire Northampton
24 v England Old Trafford (day/night)
26 v West Indies Edgbaston
29 v England Durham (day/night)

July

3 v West Indies Cardiff
4 v England Bristol
8 v West Indies Rose Bowl
10 Final Lord's
11 Reserve day

Richardson was a specialist SLA when he started FC cricket, before getting the 'yips'!

He's goofed off about it ever since but I've heard he's been bowling quite seriously in the nets these days, with Bracewell perhaps demanding he get some of it back for the team's cause. Styris has also been praticing off-spin.

Martin Crowe & Ian Smith were discussing the dilemma for the selectors in chosing a 14 man squad for the tour to England during one of their commentary stints yesterday.

I would pick minimum 16..or at least have a couple of players playing league cricket just in case.
