Interesting comments from John Bracewell on radio about NZ quicks coming back for multiple spells, and the way SA lower order took the game away from NZ in 2nd innings.

So I compared opening bowler workload at the time of 7th wicket falling in both 2nd innings:

NZ 7-188, Rabada had bowled 19 + 15 = 34, Jansen 22 + 14.1 = 36.1

SA 7-219, Southee 32 + 19 = 51, Henry 35 + 18 = 53. Then SA tail wagged, adding 135 runs in 21.4 overs.

Showing (1) the long innings by SA top 3 on day 1 took some of the legs out of the NZ seamers, (2) NZ batters didn't tire out the SA quicks in the same way, but also (3) Elgar's use of Maharaj as a stock bowler, which reduced workload for SA quicks, compared to Latham who didn't use de Grandhomme + Mitchell the same way.

Been a problem all season long. Thinking back to the India tour where both KW and Latham overbowled the quicks, though it was somewhat understandable with Somerville being undercooked.

This would be mildly hilarious though I have to say. And it would be a nice throwback to SA's last tour here where they were saved by the rain which gave them a series victory.
Had the exact same flashback. If this does get rained off, in both cases NZ would have gotten the complete opposite of what they deserved.

Congrats SA. Brave, skilled, and intelligent.

Gutsy call on selecting the 11 and batting 1st, then just played good, hard test cricket.

A lot of questions for NZ.

Congrats to SA, much better this test. Think Erwee's innings has been a bit underrated in the scheme of things here, while most of the plaudits are going towards Rabada and Verreynne for their batting yesterday, his innings (and the way the rest of the SA top order batted) in the first innings would've settled their nerves after the last test and got them into a decent position to start with. As for us, pretty woeful performance really. We were off with the bat, ball and in the field, everything seemed just a bit sleepy. Wasted opportunity really.

Also, obligatory comment about ****ing 2 test series bollocks. FFS.

Obviously Southee and Jamieson’s batting is basically irrelevant to their selection, but I just can’t comprehend what is going on behind the scenes or with the coaching when they so obviously get out in totally inexcusable ways. Is anyone actually passing on the basic cricket commonsense they aren’t applying? Has anyone pointed out they’re doing something wrong?
