Well done SA. Nice that we at least made a game of it this time, and I hope we keep improving. Fortress Hagley might help.

In retrospect, should've saved Boult for the final over. His extra pace and reverse would've made him harder to slog. Easy to say with hindsight though.

The big mistake imo was bringing back de Grandhomme. Gave SA a free 15 or so runs and took all the pressure off just after NZ had gotten back to parity.
True, but maybe the thinking was Boult could get a wicket or two and put South Africa on the backfoot right away. Pretty good effort defending from NZ (apart from a poor new ball spell) but again not enough runs against this South African outfit.

Phehlukwayo needs also to be turned into our death end bowler. He is pretty accurate and does pretty good job normally. Nice changes of pace etc.

Game not being telecast here but I'm glad I caught a river to watch it. Ab looked off colour to me, the win at the end was all down to Andile.

Miller and deBruyn, has to be. Duminy at least must go sorry but I have no faith in him any more.... Behardien at least finishes innings nowadays. Phehlukwayo has to bat, he is just to good. Can`t have Parnell in front of him.
That is the problem with canter home wins like we had in SA. Don't find out much. Death batting and death bowling.

Still not convinced about Behardien. It is probably too late too change much now with the squad. Probably only whether Morkel makes that squad now I would say with Parnell/Pretorius being in most danger ?

This was the wicket his bowling should have suited more. We always knew he would be a WIP at international level but his bowling has dropped off a bit but at 20 that will happen.

He is not as fast as he was, but he has good off-cutters, slower balls etc. Best economy rate but only bowled 5? He really has the potential to be the next Zulu for us.

JP looking good at number 4 in tests but the only way he should keep his spot is if he bowls his offies well because right now he only sneaks in at 5 for me. JP is too much of a proper batsman. ODI cricket needs energy and/or power at 5/6

No point even talking about Farhaan. Nice guy but you just feel you can get someone else in for him eventually but at 34 he will be playing 2nd fiddle to Miller in any case.

I watched from just before SA mini collapse to the end.

That was actually an enjoyable match. I enjoyed a JAMODI.

Because it wasn't a batting and maths exhibition.

That was a really enjoyable pitch. Yet it still went at 6 per over.

I think that if even on a slow and turning pitch, if inbetween plays and misses to sharp turn and other wicket taking chances - a lower order batsman can still baseball from the back foot for 6 over the bowlers head -then with modern bats we have reached a point where odi pitches no longer need to be dead boring perfect roads.

I might actually enjoy this forsaken version of the sport again. Big bats might actually be a good thing if pitches become interesting.

The maths and batting fans can become the waaahers of fandom instead of the good upstanding bowling and cricket fans like myself.

Yay for big bats and spicy pitches!
Yay for most probably accidentally inept Seddon Park groundsman.

Concerning for NZ that they couldn't win considering I'm convinced they had the best of the conditions batting first, There was so much turn and that wicket was up and down, just didn't bowl enough balls in the right place and de Kock was just outstanding, especially combating Sodhi with the reverse sweep.

Also, it's probably being harsh on him, but it was a poor night for Latham. In addition to the 11 ball duck he dropped a crucial chance - Andile off Southee when he was on just 2. Admittedly it was a very difficult chance, but having done the hard work of getting to the ball in time, he really should've grabbed it.

The Latham keeping idea must be very appealing to the management given it frees up a spot in the lower order, and it allows them to gloss over the lack of output from Ronchi/Watling this summer. But Latham's last 3-4 ODI performances have made that plan redundant.

Guptill needed back badly for this series, SA just appear to have too much more in the batting department otherwise

South Africa are full of class. Have always been one of the top sides in World Cricket over the past 20 years along with Australia. These 2 have been the most stand-out teams. New Zealand are nothing special.

That might be true but they haven't beaten us in a CWC this millennium.
