Who is jumping up and down?
Seems a bit presumptuous to underrate a SA bowling attack based on one performance, especially when the other team hasnt bowled yet. Its also hard to criticise a team for leaking runs to Sehwag on a pitch where almost 1500 runs were scored for the loss of 26 wickets.

You'd love to get KP's script-writer to write your life, wouldn't you? Fair play to the great man. Captain ****'s face when he applauded the ton was worth the admission fee alone..
How would you see his face if you paid admission and went to the ground?

so trrrrrue

*sigh.. really was the difference between the two sides...
Which is why I think the 2 teams are pretty evenly matched right now with Shane Warne retired. I still think that SA have a comparable, if not better, bowling attack than Australia, and lets face it, on a flat wicket not too long ago, Australia's bowlers came pretty close to losing a game while defending 470 odd in the last innings of a test match against a fairly average test side.

Which is why I acknowledged 'it's a bit early in the day'.

Well i dont think theres much to read into their performance in the 1st test against India. Their performance in this test so far has been poor, but again it doesnt mean anything unless they bowl poorly more often on this tour.

I agree :( We have only two bowlers really, Midge if he reaches his potential though hmm..well he needs to do it quick
but i think our bats are better than theirs

but yea still the difference was Warney

I know it's a bit early in the day, but this SA attack on Australian flat pitches isn't going to have a lot of success for mine. I didn't watch much of their series in India (besides youtube highlights), but judging by the Sehwag demolition on that track plus this doesn't give me a lot of confidence.
Really you might as well talk about bowlers failings at The ARG as that Chennai wicket - and, who knows, we'll see in time whether this one fits such a description too. Even Australia's wickets have mostly not tended to be that flat in recent years.

If SA do struggle in Aus, which is far from OOTQ obviously, it'll be because the ball doesn't swing (as it mostly didn't today) rather than because of the pitches, for mine. And I can't remember which grounds they're playing on - if The WACA and The SCG are involved, their chances obviously go up.

Wouldn't read too much in SA's first day perfomance as they have been notoriously poor starters in their recent few Test series. Pitch has generally been a featherbed with the odd ball or two deviating unexpectedly; that being said Pietersen and Bell have batted pretty well and cashed in.

Anyway, WRT Fred I strongly suspect Miller & co reserve doubts about him be able to shoulder a full bowling workload, so if he is recalled I'd guess it will be for Collingwood or Bell with perhaps Prior coming back to keep to shore up the middle order unless Tiny Tim scores big in this game.

Not saying that's what I would do, rather that's what I think will happen.
Ambrose > Prior as a batsman. Anyone who was expecting Prior to come back in and automatically score runs might well be very disappointed.

And obviously, as said, the idea of Prior keeping in Tests again is truly horrible.

Flintoff replacing a batsman has nothing going for it - if he can't be part of a four-man attack, he should not play. It's as simple as that. You can't carry passengers in the side, even if those passengers can take 2-30 in the 12 overs per day that they can bowl.

Anyone in England want to give a weather forecast? I don't trust websites after the Windies tour.

In the north it's set to piss down all day. London is 4 hours from here though, so I would also be going off websites, which suggest light showers all day, but good light. Imagine we'll see about 20 overs today.

Blue skies here, about 35 miles from London, but yes, showers forecast for later in the day. Should get three or four hours' play though.

Sun with heavy rain forecast to last from 10am through to 10pm. Prospects for play not looking good as of this morning.

There's also now a thunderstorm forecast for around 4pm. Here's hoping the forecast is dodgy because otherwise we're headed straight for a bore draw,

New record 4th wicket partnership for England v South Africa, beating Hammond and Ames at Cape Town, 1938-39. Surprised the record was under 200 though.
