Thing is though Rik, Stewart's reaction (turning to watch the ball) suggests to me that he knew he hit it.
Stewart's reaction suggested to me that he just wanted to get off the field, he didn't even seem to want to be out there. Taufel gave him the finger straight off, before he reacted. When a side's on top the umpires tend to get carried away in the moment. It's a rather odd decisision from an umpire who spent most of the match giving plumb LBWs not out because he wasn't sure.

I'd say he was the 5th seamer Marc...

He wasn't at his best but he still troubled the batsmen and created more chances than the bowler he replaced...
Who did he replace? If it's Giles then I could understand since Giles has been used in a containing role.

If it's Harmison then I wonder if you've actually been watching him bowl this season since he has caused as many problems as any of the other bowlers this season with his extra height and pace.

I think we're talking about different reactions - I mean when Stewart turned to see Boucher catch the ball, which can't have been before Taufel gave him the dreaded finger...

I think you will find I have watched him more than you have due to me not missing a day's play and you being at work...

I think I know what it looks like when someone turns round, and as soon as the ball passed the bat and went into Boucher's gloves Taufel's finger was on it's way up, Steward had only just started to turn round by the time Taufel's arm started to move.

Which is why the replay clearly showed Stewart looking at Boucher as he caught the ball then.

Which suggests that your comment is more due to the fact you don't like Harmison than anything that actually happened on the pitch.

Interesting how when it suits you you've seen all the play, yet the other day you said you hadn't been around recently.

Incidentally I took time off from work to watch this entire Test, and Kabir did not impress me that much - there were far too many poor balls delivered for the situation, and I would say the fact Vaughan barely used him relative to the others suggests that he wasn't to impressed.

He didnt really impress me, he just looks too military medium to break through many line ups... Rather like a slightly quicker Mark Ealham i thought

No, it doesn't. It shows that I've seen him bowl more than you and therefor I have seen all the crap he's bowled that the highlights miss out.

I haven't been around here recently, but I have been watching it on TV.

Yes, which I knew of, and also this match doesn't have Harmison does it?

I would say that the reason Vaughan didn't use him much was because he had 5 seamers and you can only bowl 2 at a time. Ali beat the bat quite often with unplayable deliveries and strayed occasionally, Hall took him to the cleaners but then he is going through an amazing run at the moment. I could quite easily say that you probably didn't like Kabir because of his Worcestershire connections and the fact that Chris constantly campagnes him, but I wouldn't want to go to your level.

I didn't see him following the ball.
It took a couple of replays for me to realise he had done it, but he clearly did, and that's usually a good sign that he knows he hit it.

Would you give a batsman out simply because he looks behind him? Because being a batsman who follows the ball all the way into the gloves to make sure, I would be given out every ball...

I am not disputing that he got it right, what I am disputing weather he could have got it right if Stewart had not hit it. Even though Stewart edged the ball and was rightly given out, Taufel could not have known weather he was definately out or not, so, as appears in the rules, he should not have been given out.
It's easy to second guess an umpire but the truth is that we can't tell if he saw or heard something from his vantage point.

I think that it is certain that Giles will come in at The Oval and Hussain is doubtful with a broken toe when batting against Andrew Hall.

True, but if you can't even hear it from a mic set in the stumps behind the batsman then there must be doubt.

There's a huge gap between you and Stewart though. He's been playing cricket at all levels for ages and, if he hasn't realized by now the impression which a glance back can give both the umpire and the fielding team, he probably never will.

You however haven't played a twentieth of the amount of cricket he has and would probably still get away with that at the level which you play. Test cricket is a different ball-game.

I've played enough cricket to know that you shouldn't give someone out on reaction, only the hard fact that you heard the nick, which I don't think Taufel could have.

However a sound was clearly audible, and he had the advantage of looking straight at it.
