*Official* South Africa in England Thread

It is common knowledge that after Sir Garry Sobers best mate Collie Smith died in that car accident in 1957, Sobers turned to the drink to ease his problems, but then he started playing for both of them.

I am starting to believe Smith is playing for Kallis as well. I feel sorry for Rudolph, he needs a decent hit.

And for those who have seen smith's innings is he really that good or are England just bowling really really ****.
From all reports, it seems a combined effort.

I don't mean to make him sound selfish, but I think Smith is playing for himself primarily - responding to the critics....in style!

Despite the fact he is averaging 20 with the bat and hasn't taken a wicket yet, for about 150 runs this series...
And it's not been his fault he hasn't picked one up today. He bowled really well, and has seen 2 regulation catches dropped off him.

Anderson and Gough are definetaly guys to be in the team for now, whilst if Hoggard and Johnson were there, that is a reasonable four pronged pace attack.
Strange that, but most people watching the game would say that Anderson and Gough are in serious danger of missing the next match. Gough is all but certain to...

I thought while Richard Dawson didn't really show many qualities as a bowler in Australia..he did show that he could handle a bat quite well & if he can work on his spin he might be an option for England.
He cannot bat as well as Giles.

He certainly cannot bowl as well as Giles.

Not sure about fielding though following that drop.

This, as I've harped on before, stems from the amount of FC cricket which is being played.
I agree, the English bowlers should not have been rested so much. Anderson in particular needs as much bowling as he can get outside of Tests.

A bit of both for sure.

The main problem is that he scores about 65-70% of his runs through the leg side, so Anderson in particular bowled almost every ball on his pads early on. Once he gets going, he's very hard to stop.

158.5 Flintoff to Rudolph, OUT: at last a catch held! good length delivery, pitched on the middle and angling away from the left hander, Rudolph defends, ball takes the edge and goes to Stewart,
Flintoff gets a much deserved wicket
South Africa 580/4, Partnership of 67
JA Rudolph c Stewart b Flintoff 26 (74b 3x4 0x6)
HH Dippenaar 84* (182b 13x4)
A Flintoff 35.5-9-96-1 (4nb)
It's possible....

Half an hour after tea and 700 on the board will be what England expect - so go on until they're all out is what I would do.

Put England into a position that if they are still batting after tea on Monday (yeah) they will still be behind.

Flintoff's bowling has been phenomenal and I don't care what anyone else on here says about it :P
It was a much-improved display - and if England's fielders had been able to cling on to those really fierce dollies he could well have had 3 or 4 wickets.

Mind you, his slip fielding was as bad as everyone else's (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz).

Brainless cricket.

Consider the circumstances England are in at the moment. Shot selection is a prime concern - this is a 5 game series and even facing almost inevitable defeat, there are still points to be won (mental scars to inflict, if you like) which can be carried on to the rest of the series. Go down, sure, but go down fighting. Make them shoot you before you are willing to leave the crease.

Now read on....

Bowl outside Graeme Smith's off stick and he may eventually get himself out - mind you, usually with 250 odd on the board. That's because he leaves, leaves, leaves and leaves again. The bowler gets bored first and changes his line, eventually putting the ball into an area the South African skipper wants - and he hits a boundary or pushes a single.

Remember that? It's called 'batting' - something Vaughan was brilliant at.

Bowl outside Vaughan's off stump in this game and he might well leave a couple - and then he will have a wild yahoo at the ball. Not only that, having been granted a life, he will then do it again 2 balls later.

A couple of overs later, Trescothick goes for what I can only describe as a Flintoff - and Adams shows England how to catch.

Whatever happened to 'play each ball on it's merits'?

Ah well. Curry for tea for me.:D Humble pie for England.

of that there is no doubt - however, given the flatness of the pitch, this should have been a nailed-on draw.

Of the 12 England wickets to fall - ok, let's ignore the tail - of the other nine to fall, I can only recall Butcher being undone by a really great ball. The others have all thrown it away - and that sickens me.

In England's first innings, they played as though they were setting a target in a ODI. At least in the second (after Vaughan and Trescothick's suicide pact, admittedly) Butcher and Hussain have tried to be more selective (ok, Nasser was fortunate early).

i was listening to the cricket via radio, (bbc has live coverage on the internet-go to baggygreen, then the match) and i could literally hear, not from the commentators, but from the field, how bad england were playing. if LARGE changes are not made in the next test, then Smith is a shoe-in for Bradmans 100 average.
