SA have been missing a quality all-rounder for a few years now.
If South Africa want to go the four seamer route on a consistent basis, then surely Dwaine Pretorius has to worth considering? He averaged 52 with the bat and 24 with the ball in the Sunfoil Series, which is a better batting average than Jason Smith or Wiaan Mulder, although they've done better with the ball.

He might not have the pace of Morris, but he is probably more likely to be able to keep things tight and maintain the pressure than Morris, which is maybe what you want from your fourth seamer. Yes, Morris can produce that moment of magic, but he can also leak runs when things aren't going his way.

That doesn't mean that Pretorius is necessarily the answer, but he hasn't disgraced himself in ODIs, which suggests that he could be able to make the step up to test cricket. Yet for some reason he's been pigeonholed as a shorter format player, not having been included in any recent South Africa A first class squads.

I would prefer Pretorius to Morris because he is a far better batsmen. I`m not sure if his bowling is good enough to play as a 4th containing seamer at international test level. When I look at an allrounder one of the disciplines need to get that player in the team (or very very close) by itself and then the additional skill helps balance a team.

Philander plays because he is a fantastic bowler, his batting is extra. Pollock played as a bowler, his batting was extra. Kallis was an world class batsmen, his bowling was extra. All of the all rounders we had in the past was picked for a primary skill and then they could contribute with a second skill.

When I talk about this I`m talking for the test team. LO you need at least 2 players that contribute with both, even if there are better bowlers/batsmen a good enough allrounder is a better pick.

I would agree with you on that, and it is probably the case that Pretorius is a player doesn't quite make the side on either discipline, but is maybe almost good enough on both to justify at least being selected for South Africa A to see how he goes there before coming into consideration for the test side. So it does puzzle me a little that he's being overlooked. Morris hasn't really looked like the answer, and it's still too early for Smith, Mulder or Phehlukwayo, so that does leave Pretorius as someone who could be tried, but they don't seem to want to.

I reckon the Saffers have taken a bung from CA to play Jennings into the Ashes squad
Yeah, they held the one that mattered today.

Given the weather forecast, I wonder what it would take to give SA a shot at this. If we lose as much time as forecast, they probably need to bowl us out for 150. Maybe closer to 100.
