Not so much a brain problem there, just **** execution.
Might have been an idea not to go aerial so soon into his innings. Either way it was complete ****e. We're supposed to save this sort of crap for the overseas matches aren't we?

It's not even the 20th over yet, why would you be looking to go the bomb anyway? Set yourself up, Morgan can go ballistic in the last 15, wouldn't matter if he struck at 50 till then.
Don't think he was trying to bomb. He was trying to get that fielder back a few metres so he could then milk singles all day through him. It's risk and reward. If that ball went over the top then he would've been pushed back and his innings would have been easier to play. Just the nature of the game.

Trott normally bats us through the PPs in England, so we can't self-combust whenever we seem them, which is traditional for the rest of the *****.

Yeah maybe but 95% of the time I would back Morgan to clear that man easily, he then instantly gets moved back.

Awful shot no doubt.

Chances are that they may well have moved the bloke back at the end of the powerplay anyway, the way ODIs work these days.

The logic behind it is sound, and it's what everyone wants to do, and should want to do, in ODIs. I'm not sure that it's the way to go when you are on zero and only facing your second ball (from memory) from the bowler.

Well if Morgan was dotting up to that man chances are he'd be more likely to try and go over the top when his pressure is built, and picking the wrong ball. It's just the nature of the one day game. As a batsman you need to really simplify your thinking. As simple as if it's full I'm going to swing my arms... or even have a game plan of get the players back then milk the runs. Morgan obviously has a way of going about his innings and that's what he likes to do.

The reasoning doesn't cut it for mine, as a middle order player you have to play the cards you are dealt.

Gilchrist, Gayle, etc. can get away with the "that's how I play" mantra at the top of the order, as they are setting the wheels in motion.

Anyways, I agree with what you are saying, and it's what many a player and fan uses as a defence and at times it's fair enough, but a batsman at that level shouldn't be all that perturbed by a few dot balls at that stage of their innings, and happy to get out of the powerplay and dictate the middle overs, especially when you are arguably the team's best batsman in the format.

Good point. Anyone who thinks Trott shouldn't play ODIs due to his S/R just needs to take a look at what happens when he isn't in the team. This is abysmal on a sunny day with a decent pitch.

Nah but you're not getting it, the reason why he's their best batsman is because he's allowed to accumulate every time he's in, and he does that by ensuring he has spots to hit singles in to. He has to take that risk to play the way he plays. SA had the luxury of being able to squeeze the single because they had already got top order poles. Morgan felt he needed to seize the initiative, he just executed his shot horribly. You wouldn't see him play that shot early in his innings because he normally wouldn't need to. It's one day cricket, this happens.
