Anyone who is a walk-up starter for the Test side should get a central contract, no questions asked. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous IMO. Obviously his retirement from limited overs cricket should factor into how much that contract is worth but to have a cemented Test player not contracted would be absurd.
Exactly. The only question is should a guy like Bairstow who is on the fringes for all the squads get a contract. A guy like KP with so many test caps and experience simply has to get offered one, whether he signs it is another matter.

Indeed, what a balance he'd bring to the team, but I guess Compton and Hildreth can feel hard done-by too.
How can they?

The guy picked averages 49 after 75 matches and hasn't got the best track to bat on in county cricket to help him.

If they had gone back to Bairstow or Morgan I would agree with you but Taylor deserves the chance.

That average has been going down for the last 2 years hasn't it?

Ahh well, we'll see. He's certainly not the worst pick.

Well he averaged 50 two years ago, now averages 49.

So lets not over exaggerate!
Didn't he average quite a bit over 50, I'm being accused of exaggerating again.

Meh, I'm bitterly biased and have admitted it, as I say I was more upset when Morgan was leap-frogged, at least Taylor has a great first-class record.

I thought Taylor should've debuted way back when Morgan did. I've cooled on him slightly then for a couple of reasons and I'd preferred to either see some continuity with Bairstow, or Compton selected simply because I think he's the better bat, but it's certainly not a terrible call at all.

Hope Ravi genuinely does have "personal reasons" (albeit of the not too serious variety, as I'm not a complete ****) and the selectors haven't just fudged things with a convenient excuse that's unlikely to get too many probing Qs from the fourth estate.

Have horrible suspicion Taylor's been picked on the back of his televised List A ton, as he's not been in that great nick in the longer game. 554 @ 42.61 is ok, but he's behind Lumb, Read & Wessels in the Notts averages and there'd have to be several serious accidents for any of them to get a call.

Compton for me, but hey.
